Louisville, Ky. (April 8, 2001) - Betting on Bert, Elaine and Richard Klein’s Outofthebox in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager was suspended Sunday after Churchill Downs officials received word that an injury will prevent the colt from competing in Kentucky Derby 127 on May 5.
Outofthebox suffered a foot injury in a fifth-place finish in Saturday’s Flamingo Stakes (GIII) at Hialeah Park that will knock the Bernard Flint-trained son of Montbrook out of consideration for the Kentucky Derby. Assistant trainer Steve Flint, the trainer’s son, said by telephone Sunday that the injury to the colt’s right hind leg will keep him on the sidelines for six weeks-to-two months and he has no chance to make the Derby.
“He clipped heels on the first turn and pulled a pretty big chunk out of his quarter,” Flint said. “When we took his shoe off, it pulled the whole inside wall of his foot off with it. It went pretty good into the foot, so we’re going to have to rebuild his foot.”
There are no scratches in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, but wagering can be suspended on a horse when it is determined that an injury or ailment that will prevent the horse from competing in the Kentucky Derby. There are no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager and the money previously wagered on Outofthebox in Pool 3 will remain in the pool. Wagering on the horse, listed as number 17 in the pool of 24 wagering interests, was suspended about 45 minutes into Sunday’s final session of betting on Pool 3.
