The Thoroughbred Corp.'s recent acquisition, War Emblem, took advantage of a paceless beginning to Kentucky Derby (GI) 128 and scored a front-running, wire-to-wire victory in the first leg of the 2002 Visa Triple Crown. A dark bay or brown son of Our Emblem and the Lord At War mare Sweetest Lady, War Emblem took command from the opening bell under Southern California-based jockey Victor Espinoza, who won his first Kentucky Derby, and never looked back, covering the mile and quarter distance of the Derby in 2:01.13 over a "fast" track at Churchill Downs. He was bred in Kentucky by Charles Nuckols Jr. & Sons.

The late Prince Ahmed Salman, principal owner of the Thoroughbred Corp., raises the Kentucky Derby 128 trophy in triumph after his War Emblem wired a deep field of seventeen other rivals to capture the first leg of the 2002 Visa Triple Crown in Louisville, Ky. on May 4, 2002. Joining Salman for the Kentucky Derby trophy presentation were (from left to right) jockey Victor Espinoza; trainer Bob Baffert; Carl Pascarella, president and CEO, Visa U.S.A.; and Tom Meeker, president and CEO, Churchill Downs Incorporated. |

War Emblem
Trainer Bob Baffert, now a three-time Kentucky Derby (GI) winner, said all was well with Kentucky Derby winner War Emblem on the morning after the race and the colt would now take aim at the Preakness (GI), the second jewel of the Visa Triple Crown.
"It looks good," Baffert said. "You can tell he ran hard. He's a little tired today. Yesterday he was pretty wound up after the race, but today he's finally mellowed out a little bit. He can be tough, this son of a gun." Baffert will train War Emblem at Churchill Downs, work him early next week and then ship him to Baltimore.
