Buddha, the winner of the Wood Memorial (GI), was declared out of the Kentucky Derby with a foot injury Friday morning.
Trainer H. James Bond told Churchill Downs officials that the gray/roan son of Unbridled's Song would not run in the Kentucky Derby after discovering the colt had an injured left foot.
"The horse (Buddha) came out of his stall this morning right before 5 a.m. and he was off in his left front leg," Bond said. "Our preliminary looks show more of a foot, possibly a bruised foot right now. We're going to do what's best in the interest of the horse and wait for another day. It's very disappointing for my clients and myself but Buddha will have another day."
Buddha, who has a record of 3-0-0 in four starts with earnings of $489,600. The colt was undefeated in three tries this year and would have been the first starter for Bond. Jockey Pat Day, who was slated to ride Buddha, will be without a Derby mount for the first time since 1983, breaking a streak of 18 consecutive mounts.

Derby Starter Analysis By: Steve Fugitte |
Is an incredible specimen in the flesh who is coming to hand rapidly for New York-based trainer James Bond. Son of Unbridled's Song will try to finish the job his father couldn't and he may even more tools to work with. Love the way he dug in and won the Wood Memorial on heart and determination down along the inside. Many will fear the dreaded bounce off that huge effort but this big strong colt is giving no indications that he will react to the effort - in fact - he should improve again here. Gets local legend Pat Day in the irons and they will stay in contact without falling too far out. Foolish to leave him off any tickets - my opinion of him gets higher each day. Threat to win several Triple Crown races if he continues to improve at this rapid rate. |

Pedigree Anlysis By: John Gaver III |
Born: April 19, 1999; Dosage Index: 2.00
Lighty-raced Buddha is by the young sire Unbridled's Song, winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (GI) who went off favored in the 1996 Kentucky Derby (finished fifth, beaten 5 1/2-lengths), a sire of three crops and nine stakes winners including Unbridled Elaine, an earner of $1.7 million and winner of the Breeders' Cup Distaff (GI); Songandaprayer, winner of the Fountain of Youth (GI) stakes as a three-year-old; Unbridled Time, winner of the listed WHAS-11 stakes as a juvenile and Extend, winner of the listed Stage Door Betty Stakes. Buddha is out of the Storm Cat mare Cahooters, an unraced half-sister to Hawthrone Derby (GIII) victor St. Forbes, an earner of $157,645 on the racetrack. Cahooters is by sire of sires Storm Cat, a sire of 138 producing daughters and 20 stakes winners including the dams of Phalaenopsis (Jpn), a two-time Japanese champion; millionaire Black Tuxedo (Jpn); two-time champion Mujahid; and the black-type winners Max's Pal, Berg Ticket (Jpn), Baptize and Penny's Gold. While Unbridled's Song's get are largely unroven going a classic distance of ground, Buddha is an example of a proven modern day Derby-winning pedigree cross, or nick, as the gray or roan colt is an example of a horse whose top, or sire, line traces to Raise a Native (via Mr. Prospector) and whose distaff, or bottom, line traces to Northern Dancer (via Storm Bird). In the past seven runnings of the Kentucky Derby, two winners (Thunder Gulch in 1995 and Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000) have had a Raise a Native-Northern Dancer nick.
