James Cassels and Bob Zollars' Easyfromthegitgo, winner of the Lecomte Stakes and runner-up in the Louisiana Derby (GII) breezed four furlongs at Churchill Downs on April 16 in :49.20 over a "fast" track. Regular jockey Donnie Meche was in the irons for trainer Steve Asmussen as the son of Dehere moved through a first quarter of :25.20. No "gallop out" time was available for the colt, who will run in the April 20 Coolmore Lexington (GII) at Keeneland in preparation for an expected run in the Preakness (GI) on May 18. This account of Easyfromthegigo's breeze on April 16, 2002 at Churchill Downs is from Jill Byrne, who has been covering the work tabs of the top three-year-olds all year for www.kentuckyderby.com: Easyfromthegitgo, preparing for an engagement in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes (GII) on Apr. 20, was out for a liesurely breeze on Apr. 16 for trainer Steve Asmussen. With jockey Donnie Meche in the irons, the colt went off very easily the first quarter-mile and finished up in :49 1/5. He is a smallish, light-framed colt who moves very smoothly, yet doesn't cover a great deal of ground. Easyfromthegitgo did not gallop out, though he was not asked for anything by the rider; he has been running hard all year and doesn't carry a great deal of extra condition, therefore he doesn't seem to need as much hard work as some of the other top three-year-olds currently stabled on the backside of Churchill Downs.

Derby Starter Background By: Jenny Kellner |
Hasn't started since finishing a nose off Repent in this year's Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, though he is scheduled to make his fourth outing as a three-year-old in the Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on April 20. Prior to winding up on the wrong end of a photo finish in the Louisiana Derby, Easyfromthegitgo finished third in the Risen Star Stakes and won the $100,000 Lecomte Stakes. "From a standpoint of trainer to horse, I've got a great amount of respect for him," trainer Steve Asmussen said about Easyfromthegitgo. "He's showed up and ran hard a lot of times and has been wonderfully consistent. The reason he's running in the Lexington is I think he's got an excellent chance to win it. We're doing what's best for Easyfromthegitgo." |

Pedigree Anlysis By: John Gaver III |
Dosage Index: 2.71; Born: April 21, 1999
Easyfromthegitgo is by the champion Dehere, a sire of five crops and over 30 stakes winners to date including champions Belle Du Jour and Mi Amigo Guelo; graded stakes winners Graeme Hall and Take Charge Lady and the black-type winners Arrested Dreams, Descapate and Miss Seffens. Easyfromthegitgo is the first foal from the Easy Goer mare Montera, who is an unraced half-sister to Grade I winner Serape and multiple graded stakes winner Batique. Easy Goer was an earner of nearly $5 million on the racetrack and a winner of the mile and a half Belmont Stakes (GI) and the mile and a quarter Travers Stakes (GI). As a broodmare sire, Easy Goer has thrown daughters who have produced the stakes winners Desert Hero and Mull Of Kintyre. While Dehere is a sire who gets "live" runners, his progency tend to be precocious and are largely untested against top-class company beyond nine furlongs. On the upside, in the case of Easyfromthegitgo, he gets a tremendous amount of stamina from the distaff side of his family, as his dam sire was a multiple grade one stakes winner going a classic distance of ground and his female line is peppered with stamina influences, including Cozzene and Funistrada.
