Derby Starter Analysis By: Steve Fugitte
Seemed like he was figuring out the game when he came calling late in the Santa Anita Derby (GI). Granted the horses he was chasing need oxygen badly at that point and were slowing down rapidly. Still the right running style and juicy price to get third or fourth in here at boxcar odds. Trainer Jeff Mullins wins more than his share in California and Arizona and is not making the trip for his health. Many times the minor placings in the Derby go to the late runners who avoid selling out to win the race. He fits this profile best but probably won't threaten Broker's Tip's distinction.

    Born: March 26, 1999; Dosage Index: 1.60
Lusty Latin is by champion El Prado (Ire), a sire of 7 crops and 30 stakes winners including millionaire Nite Dreamer, multiple stakes winner The Happy Hopper, the veteran stakes-winning sprinter Chindi and the crack turf sprinter/miler El Cielo. Additionally, El Prado (Ire) is a son of legendary European sire-of-sires Sadler's Wells, who is by Northern Dancer, winner of the 1964 Kentucky Derby (GI) and a prominent influence in the bloodlines of past Derby winners. Lusty Latin, who fetched $29,000 as a yearling at the California Breeders' Sale in August of 2000, is a half-brother to the stakes winner McMahon, winner of the listed Sportsman's Park Breeders' Cup Handicap. His dam, Scarlet Ann, is by champion and Horse of the Year Afleet, a sire of 10 crops, 97 producing daughters and 16 stakes winners including the dams of Nobo Jack (earned over $2 million); Estrellero; Olympian; Sky Alliance; Davide Umbro (Ity); Millonerlo; Classic Alliance; Skipjack; A New Twist and Rippling Return. Lusty Latin is an example of a stamina-on-speed pedigree cross, or nick, with the stamina source in his sire line coming from Northern Dancer (via El Prado) and the speed source in his distaff family coming from Raise A Native (via Mr. Prospector). The Northern Dancer-Mr. Prospector nick has also been significant in the bloodlines of Kentucky Derby winners in the past 10-15 years.
