Trainer Steve Asmussen said the Arkansas Derby (GII) winner came back tired from his effort in Saturday's (May 4) Kentucky Derby(GI).
"He just had no energy yesterday," Asmussen said. "There was not a lot of fight in my dog, so to speak. We are going to freshen him up."
Asmussen said the Preakness (GI) remained a possibility for Louisiana Derby (GII) runner-up Easyfromthegitgo, but not so for Windward Passage, who was entered Wednesday (May 1) in the Kentucky Derby, but was excluded from the maximum field of 20 because of insufficient stakes earnings.
"I don't think that track, with its tight turns, the race would set up right for him," Asmussen said. "But then this race, the way it unfolded, didn't either. It probably saved the owners $30,000."
However, Asmussen told Pimlico officials that a start in the $100,000 Sir Barton Stakes on the Preakness undercard remains a possibility for Windward Passage.

Derby Starter Analysis By: Steve Fugitte |
Carries the hopes of Team Asmussen solo after Windward Passage was bumped at the last minute by a Derby Fever type entry. Remaining contender is the best in the barn anyway and would be fairly competitive in this tough and well-matched event if able to improve again off his smashing Arkansas Derby effort last out. Good trainer is learning the Derby game with his second straight starter and his barn dominates Midwest racing at many levels. Not my absolute favorite but hard to eliminate. Can't blame you for calling his number in exotics. |

Pedigree Anlysis By: John Gaver III |
Born: March 18, 1999; Dosage Index: 3.50
Private Emblem is by the young sire Our Emblem, an impeccably-bred stallion who is by sire-of-sire's Mr. Prospector out of the multiple Grade I winner and champion mare Personal Ensign. Our Emblem is the sire of three crops and three stakes winners including Arkansas Derby (GII) Private Emblem, Illinois Derby (GII) winner War Emblem and the minor stakes winner Uncle Puck. He also has It All Adds Up, who finished third in the Comely Stakes (GIII) at Aqueduct. Private Emblem is out of the Halo mare Merion Miss, who is the dam of four foals, all of which have made it to the racetrack. He is a half-brother to Rhum, who is listed stakes-placed on the East Coast and an earner of over $100,000, and his female family traces back to Dixie Brass (4th dam), winner of the Metropolitan Handicap (GI) and to Grade II stakes winner Odyle (4th dam), an earner of $479,500 at the races. While Our Emblem's get are largely unproven at a classic distance of ground, Private Emblem gets a healthy dose of stamina from his broodmare sire Halo, a prolific dam sire and sire of 319 producing daughters and 113 stakes winners including the dams of King Halo (Jpn), an earner of $4.3 million; four-time champion Singspiel (Ire), an earner of $3.5 million; Narita King O (Jpn), an earner of $2.4 million; Pine Bluff, an earner of $2.2 million; Halo America, an earner of $1.4 million; Lady Ballade (Ire), an earner of $1.3 million; three-time champion Rainbows for Life, an earner of $1.1 million and champions Basqueian and Catch the Ring.
