Saratoga Blues put forth a disappointing effort in the Mar. 23 Lane's End Spiral Stakes (GII) at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., finishing last in the eight-horse field at odds of nearly 5-2. He was beaten 22 lengths in the race by Perfect Drift. The son of Twining, who is trained by Tony Dutrow, had a head lead after a quarter mile in :22.95, but stopped badly after six furlongs, which was run in 1:11.18. Saratoga Blues' connections had visions of the Preakness Stakes (GI) for their colt prior to his flat effort in the Spiral. "Maybe he's a Preakness horse," trainer Tony Dutrow said. "And if he is, he'll go into that race the way we want him to. I'm still young, and I don't think this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. I'm not going to beat this horse up just trying to make the Derby."
