Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer worked his erstwhile Kentucky
Derby (GI) hopeful U S S Tinosa six furlongs at Churchill Downs on May 2 after the
renovation break with rider Rene Douglas aboard. The Northern California
conditioner caught his Foxhound colt in 1:12 flat for the distance, with out
times of 1:26 for seven eighths and 1:42 for the mile. (Churchill
clockers gave the horse a six-furlong time of 1:11.60 for the drill on
the "fast" strip.)
U S S Tinosa was entered for Derby 128, but was one of four
colts who didn't make the starting list because of a lack of graded
stakes earnings.
"If someone wins the Derby real big, then we'd go the other way
(the Hawthorne Derby on Saturday, May 11). But otherwise we're thinking
Preakness (GI)."

Derby Starter Background By: Jenny Kellner |
U S S Tinosa was bet down to 7-2 odds in the Santa Anita Derby on April 6, but encountered trouble on the clubhouse turn and never got things in gear, as he finished fifth of eight in the Grade I, nine-furlong race, beaten 5 1/2-lengths by Came Home. The colt's trainer, Jerry Hollendorfer, who has never had a Kentucky Derby entrant, told the San Francisco Chronicle that U S S Tinosa could still become his first Derby starter. "The owners and Kent (jockey Kent Desormeaux) think he's still legitimate. I want to train him here at Bay Meadows for a few days and see how he's going and then decide what to do." |

Pedigree Anlysis By: John Gaver III |
Born: February 12, 1999; Dosage Index: 1.80
Named after the World War II submarine who completed twelve war patrols in the Pacific from 1943-1945 and was credited with sinking 16 enemy ships, U S S Tinosa is by the relatively young stallion Foxhound, a representative of the Northern Dancer sire line (via Danzig) and a sire of four crops and six stakes winners including Mount Abu (Ire), winner of the Prix de la Foret (Gr. I); the multiple restricted stakes winner Shesastonecoldfox and the restricted stakes winner Beautiful Stranger. U S S Tinosa is out of Angel Puss, a daughter of Wolf Power (SAf), who was minor stakes-placed in Ohio and is the dam of five foals to race, all of which are winners. He is a half-brother to Lendell Ray, who was a top-class turf stayer that won the Jersey Derby (GIII) on grass. U S S Tinosa's third dam is Angel Island, a multiple graded stakes winner and blue-hen broodmare who produced the stakes winners Our Reverie, Silken (GB), Sharrood, Island Escape and Secret Beauty. U S S Tinosa's broodmare sire, the South African-bred Wolf Power (SAf) is a two-time champion and Horse of the Year who has sired 99 producing daughters. U S S Tinosa is a nine furlong winner on dirt, having won the restricted Sham Stakes on Feb. 8, and is an example of a Northern Dancer (via Danzig)-Round Table (via Flirting Around) pedigree nick, or cross. U S S Tinosa acts like a horse who can stay a mile and a quarter and is bred to stay a classic distance of ground as well, especially with his stamina-laden distaff family.
