Derby Contenders Arrive From England, California
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 30, 2002) - A plane carrying the Kentucky
Derby hopes of trainer Aidan O'Brien,
Castle Gandolfo and Johannesburg,
arrived at Keeneland Race Course at 6:45 p.m. (EDT) Tuesday (Apr. 30).
Johannesburg, the two-year-old champion, is coming off a
second-place finish in The Gladness Stakes (Gr. III) in his three-year-old debut. Castle
Gandolfo, a son of Gone West, scored a 2 ½-length victory in the Fosters
International Trial at Lingfield Park Jerry Bailey is expected to ride
Castle Gandolfo while a jockey has not been named for Johannesburg.
The duo will remain in quarantine until Thursday (May 2) and are expected to
train over the Keeneland surface Friday (May 3). The colts will then ship to
Churchill Downs Saturday (May 4) morning.
Arriving earlier Tuesday (Apr. 30) from California was U S S Tinosa, the
fifth-place finisher in the Santa Anita Derby (GI). The Jerry
Hollendorfer-trained colt, who arrived at 3:45 p.m. (EDT), is currently 22nd
on the Derby Graded Earnings List. He is stabled in Barn 42.
