WEST (California) -- Hollywood Futurity (Grade I) winner Siphonic has
been removed from consideration for the Kentucky Derby (GI) and the Visa
Triple Crown following the discovery of a minor ankle injury.
The Blood-Horse's Steve Haskin reported Friday that Amerman
Racing's son of
Siphon would be taken out of training by trainer David Hofmans because
of "wear and tear" in the colt's right front ankle.
The announcement came just days after the colt finished a
disappointing third as a heavy favorite to Medaglia d'Oro and U S S
Tinosa in the San Felipe (GII) at Santa Anita. He had finished a
distant second as a heavy favorite to Labamta Babe in his previous start
in the Santa Catalina (GII), but was compromised that day by a poor
start.
"We're going to give him a little R-and-R," Hofmans told Haskin.
"He came out of the San Felipe with a little stiffness in his right
front ankle. He X-rayed clean and scanned clean, but he must have
twisted the ankle."
Siphonic closed as a narrow 6-1 favorite in last week's Pool 2
of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. His loss in the San Felipe dropped
his career record to 3-1-2 in six races.
Hofmans said the colt should return in "late summer or early
fall."
MIDWEST (Kentucky, Illinois, Louisiana, Arkansas) -- Major contenders
for the Kentucky Derby (GI) and Visa Triple Crown usually spend the
winter in the warmer climates of the South and West, but three horses
that have spent the past few weeks dealing with the wind chill factor
are the headliners in Saturday's $500,000-added Lane's End Spiral Stakes
(GII) at Northern Kentucky's Turfway Park.
Local hopes Request For Parole and Perfect Drift renew their
budding rivalty in the 1 1/8-mile event that has also attracted Saratoga
Blues, an unbeaten colt who has trained in Maryland and shipped to New
York for three victories that included a win in Aqueduct's Whirlaway.
Request For Parole and Perfect Drift have run 1-2 in their last
two races at Turfway, with the former getting the best of the latter in
both the WEBN Frog Stakes and the John Battaglia Memorial -- but the two
horses were separated by just a nose last time out. Both horses will
have new jockeys for the Lane's End Spiral as Pat Day, a five-time
winner of the Spiral, climbs aboard Request For Parole and Eddie
Delahoussaye makes a rare journey from his Southern California home to
ride Perfect Drift.
The Steve Margolis-trained Request For Parole, who is owned by
Jeri and Sam Knighton, has been installed as the 8-5 morning line
favorite. He has a career record of 4-3-1 in nine races and has already
competed with the likes major Kentucky Derby contenders Repent, Harlan's
Holiday and Siphonic.
"I always watch all the good races anyway, but I maybe have a
little more interest this year," Margolis told Jennie Rees of the
Louisville Courier-Journal. "Harlan's Holiday blew them away in the
Florida Derby after two good seconds. And Repent has done nothing wrong.
If this colt runs big, it should put him right there with them. I think
it means something - at least until he gets beat."
Stonecrest Farm's Perfect Drift, a homebred son of Dynaformer
trained by Murray Johnson, is also a model of consistency. He won the
Prevue Stakes at Turfway in January and is 2-3-0 in five races.
Saratoga Blues won the Whirlaway at Aqueduct last month to
stretch his unbeaten string to three, but trainer Tony Dutrow has said
his lightly raced colt would not be pointed to the Kentucky Derby. The
Maryland-based colt is the second choice in Spiral morning line at 5-2
and will be ridden by regular jockey Mario Pino.
The field also includes Straight Gin, Azillion, Benny The Hawk,
Gold Dollar and My Man Ryan.
The Spiral undercard at Turfway is headed by the $100,000
Rushaway for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16-miles. Mapp Hill, winner of the
Sugar Bowl Stakes at the Fair Grounds, will take on improving young
stars Wild
Horses, American Style, Mr. Mellon and Derby Drive.
The $60,000 Hansel at six furlongs has attracted World Trade and
World Champion in its field of six.
There are no major contenders for the Kentucky Derby in the
field for Saturday's $100,000 Rebel (GIII), Oaklawn Park's major prep
for its $750,000 Arkansas Derby (GII). But that may not be the case
after the race.
A pair of Steve Asmussen-trained colts -- Team Valor's Windward
Passage and Coast to Coast Racing
Fund's Interminable Gold -- could move into the Derby picture with
strong efforts in the 1 1/16-mile race. The former was a fast-closing
third in a division of the Southwest Stakes on March 2 and the latter
closed considerable ground to finish fifth in the same race.
Others in the Rebel include Raymond Dieter's Dusty Spike, a
strong runner-up to the Asmussen-trained Private Emblem in the other
division of the Southwest; California invader Ocean Sound; and Jeremiah
Jack, the Tom Amoss-trained winner of the Texas Juvenile at Sam Houston
Park.
DUBAI -- This year's top candidates for Godolphin's bid to win a
Kentucky Derby will be identified in Saturday's $1 million UAE Derby on
Saturday's Dubai World Cup undercard at Nad al Sheba in the Persian Gulf
Emirate.
Fourteen horses have been entered in the race, which will be
run at the Kentucky Derby distance of
1 1/4-miles for the first time. The top Godolphin prospect may be
Essence of Dubai, a son of Pulpit who won the UAE 2000 Guineas last time
out and the Norfolk (GII) last fall at Santa Anita. Frankie Dettori
will ride.
Other Godolphin contenders include Firebreak, who lost by a nose
to Essence of Dubai in the Guineas; Janadel, who will be ridden by Jerry
Bailey; Ibn Al Haitham, runner-up to Essence of Dubai in the Norfolk who
has yet to win in four career starts; Henri Lebasque and Moon Ballad.
"Right now we are lacking a really high-profile star who is
being aimed at the Kentucky Derby," said Simon Crisford, racing manager
for Godolphin. "To win that race you have got to have the stamina to
match the class...Saturday night will tell us if we have got the class."
Godolphin has participated in the last three renewals of the
Kentucky Derby and its best finish was a sixth-place run by China Visit
in 2000. Godolphin's Express Tour finished eighth in last year's
Kentucky Derby.
Johannesburg Update -- Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier's Irish-based
Johannesburg, the unbeaten winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (GI) and
the reigning American 2-year-old champion, will use a one-mile race over
the all-weather surface at Britain's Lingfield Park as his lone prep for
the Kentucky Derby.
British racing officials have granted approval for the special
race for the Aidan O'Brien-trained son of Hennessy on April 6, which
will be sponsored by international beer company Foster's.
"This is tremendous news and we are delighted that the Race
Planning Department has agreed with our proposals," said Ian Renton,
director of racing at Arena Leisure, which owns Lingfield. "This
promises to be a great occasion and is designed as a prep race for this
season's run for the roses, the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in
May."
Kentucky Oaks Update -- Forward Gal (GIII) winner Take The Cake and
Davona Dale (GII) runner-up Colonial Glitter head a field 10 3-year-old
fillies in Saturday's $150,000 Bourbonette Breeders' Cup on the Spiral
undercard at Turfway Park. The race will be run at 1 1/16-miles.
