Ten possible for "Run for the Lillies"
BELLA BELLUCCI - After working seven furlongs in 1:30.40 Saturday,
trainer Neil Drysdale had Bella Bellucci back on the track this morning
to trot. The daughter of French Deputy, certain to be one of the
favorites in Friday's Kentucky Oaks (GI), has been an impressive winner of
her only two starts this year, winning the Santa Paula at Santa Anita
and then the Comely (GIII) two weeks ago. Gary Stevens has the mount.
BELTERRA/TAKE THE CAKE - Robert Manfuso's Belterra walked the shedrow
Sunday morning and Elizabeth Valando's Take The Cake walked in and out
of the starting gate and then galloped after the renovation break.
"Sunday was a regular walk day for Belterra," trainer Carl
Nafzger said. "She will gallop in the morning and I will talk more about
her after she gallops."
CHAMROUSSE/MS BROOKSKI - Trainer Niall O'Callghan's two Kentucky Oaks
hopefuls galloped a mile with assistant trainer Jennifer Brown handling
the morning duties on both fillies.
HABIBTI - Two-time stakes winner Habibti, trainer Bob Baffert's hopeful
in Friday's Kentucky Oaks, galloped a mile and one-half again this
morning under Mick Jenner.
The Tabasco Cat filly won the Del Mar Debutante and Hollywood
Starlet last year but was runner-up to You in both the Las Virgenes and
Santa Anita Oaks (GI) this winter.
IMPERIAL GESTURE/TEMPERA - Godolphin Racing's Imperial Gesture schooled
in the paddock and at the starting gate and then galloped a mile and a
quarter before the renovation break under exercise rider Lee Roebuck.
The same schedule is planned for Monday with a work scheduled
for Tuesday.
Tempera was expected to be back at the barn later Sunday after
spending the night at a veterinary clinic in Lexington, Ky., because of
a fever.
"Right now it (the Oaks) is not looking very good for her," said
Tom Albertrani, assistant to trainer Saeed bin Suroor. "We are just
going to see how she is the next couple of days. At this point, I would
probably say very doubtful.
"It is disappointing, but these things happen. Hopefully, we
will have her back at Belmont this spring and summer and go from there.
It is just one of those things that come at the wrong time. You just
have to be patient, and make sure they are ready for the next one. We'll
give her the time she needs."
TAKE CHARGE LADY - Select Stable's Take Charge Lady jogged twice around
shortly after 6:15 with Helen Pitts aboard for trainer Ken McPeek.
Even though Take Charge Lady shows a win and a second on sloppy
tracks, McPeek is hoping for a fast track Friday.
"My worst nightmare is if it is sloppy Oaks Day. I don't want to
run her in the slop," McPeek said. "Her worst race in the slop was here
(in the Golden Rod last fall). I just think she didn't like the mud
here."
YOU - Edmund Gann's You, one of the likely favorites for Friday's
Kentucky Oaks, backtracked a mile this morning for trainer Robert
Frankel as she continued her preparations for the Grade I filly
headliner.
Exercise rider Jose Cuevas reported all was well with the gallop
by the daughter of You And I and Frankel gave it his nod of approval.
"She's doing good," the trainer noted. "She doesn't need a whole
lot now. She's had lots of racing and her work the other day (6 furlongs
1:13.20 April 24) was terrific. The clockers told me they loved the way
she did it."
You will be ridden by Jerry Bailey in the $500,000-added Oaks.
