Trainer Ron Ellis reported all was well with his fourth-place Kentucky Derby finisher on Sunday morning.
"He never really got a clear shot to run until it was too late," Ellis said. "I was watching the head-on replays and it looked like David (jockey David Flores) had a lane but, somebody, I don't know who it was, closed it. It is like Wayne Lukas said, the toughest thing about this race is you only get one shot at it. Maybe we will get a little better luck the next time."
And when would the next time be for Atswhatimtalknbout?
"My gut feeling is the Belmont," said Ellis, of his first Derby starter. "We pushed hard to make this race and I don't think to come back in two weeks and then another three would be best. I am leaning toward spacing his races and giving him a chance to develop."
Ellis said he was not sure of his travel plans for Atswhatimtalknbout.
"I may go back to California or I could just leave him here and keep him in Paul's (brother-in-law Paul McGee) barn. We have been using his exercise rider (Raul Vizcarrando) and I could shuttle in and out. With him, the shorter distance to travel, the better."

ATSWHATIMTALKNBOUT has a lot of hype behind him but has really underachieved on the racetrack. He still fits the 'two other than' allowance condition and has been beaten twice by Buddy Gil in major Southern California preps. Arrived here early for solid trainer Ron Ellis and has looked good going over the surface but his schooling sessions in the paddock have been quite a different story. He constantly calls out to the fillies and has his mind on everything but running, which bodes poorly for racing on a day when 16 other runners will be in the paddock and 140,000+ fans will be all over the racetrack and the backside. He is one of several who could come unglued mentally and even if he doesn't he may not be good enough to win or even run in the money in this tough field. Add to that his name recognition and famous Hollywood owners and it just seems like a bad deal for the expected value. I have never had a high opinion of this horse and would be very surprised if he finished top five in this race. Do expect him to win many races on down the line. |

Atswhatimtalknbout is by Horse of the Year and champion A.P. Indy, a son of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew and the sire of eight crops and 43 stakes winners at this writing including champion Tempera, Grade I winner Golden Missile; millionaire Symboli Indy; Grade I winner Aptitude and Grade II winner Lu Ravi. The big, dark bay colt is out ofthe Red Ransom mare Lucinda K, who was stakes placed at the races and is the dam of two foals to race with Atswhatimtalknbout being her only winner. As a broodmare sire, Red Ransom is the sire of 114 producing daughters including stakes winners Strut The Stage, Percy Hope, Platel, Sacred Song and A Vision In Gray. Atswhatimtalknbout is inbred to Bold Ruler, who won 23-of-33 starts lifetime and a multitude of stakes races from distances of five furlongs to a mile and three-sixteenths. Bold Ruler is also the sire of the immortal Secretariat. Additionally, Atswhatimtalknbout is inbred to the precocious Hail to Reason (by Turn-to), who won seven stakes races as a juvenile for Hirsch Jacobs. This colt by a champion, is a grandson of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, and his sire's dam, Weekend Surprise, is by 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat. Atswhatimtalknbout is a big bodied colt with smooth action, and he has plenty of classic distance influences on the the top (Seattle Slew and Secretariat) and bottom (Damascus and Sword Dancer) lines of his pedigree; he should have no trouble staying a mile and a quarter.
