Ken and Sarah Ramsey's Badge of Silver, who would have been one of the favorites in the Apr. 12 Blue Grass Stakes (GI) at Keeneland, will miss the nine-furlong test and the remainder of the Triple Crown races due to a hairline fracture to his right front cannon bone.
The colt's trainer, Ronny Werner, said the Silver Deputy colt had a routine gallop Friday (Apr. 11) morning at Keeneland, and when he took the colt out of his stall to graze that afternoon, he noticed the colt was lame. X-rays were taken, and they revealed the fracture.
"It's a hairline crack, an inch above where he had the fracture last year," an emotional Werner told Daily Racing Form's Jay Privman. "It's tough to take.
"I'm just glad we caught it today. If he'd have run tomorrow, he'd have been hurt badly. We're all heartbroken."
"We brought him down to the paddock to school him, then galloped him a mile and a half," owner Ken Ramsey told The Blood-Horse's Steve Haskin. "We had some rain and the track was sloppy, but went ahead and galloped him anyway. He came back sound and everything looked super. That was ten minutes to nine. At ten minutes to three this afternoon they took him out of his stall to graze him and he was noticably lame. X-rays were taken and it showed a hairline fracture of the cannon bone, two to two and a half inches above the fracture he suffered last year. We'll take him to Dr. (Larry) Bramlage, and he'll probably put another screw in."
"This is devastating to us, and to Ronny Werner, who looked after him like he would his own children," Ramsey contined. "This horse has meant so much to him and to me and my wife. All we can do now is keep a stiff upper lip. I hope I can. We're off to the Blue Grass Dinner right now (evening of Apr. 11), and I've got a TV interview scheduled. I hope they don't see a grown man cry. You get so passionate about the game. You spend the money for yearlings and watch them develop, then you get to the eve of the final prep for the Kentucky Derby and something like this happens. There was absolutely no indication anything was amiss."

Badge Of Silver, a March foal, is by Silver Deputy, a sire of 12 crops and 46 stakes winners including the champions Silverbulletday, Deputy Inxs, Archers Bay, Deputy Jane West, Scotzanna, Poetically and Larkwhistle. He is out of the Silver Hawk mare Silveroo, the dam of three foals, two of which have made it to the races and Badge Of Silver being her only stakes winner at this writing. Silveroo is a full sister to the stakes winning mare Formidabale Lady, a black-type earner in Southern California, and she is a granddaughter of the great Roberto, who is by Hail to Reason, the sire of stayers such as Lear Fan and Dynaformer. Badge of Silver, who is inbred to the stayers Nashua and Hail to Reason, has a tail female line laden with black type and traces back to Mom's Command (in her fourth dam), champion 3-year-old filly and five-time grade one stakes winner. As a broodmare sire, Silver Hawk has 161 producing daughters and 20 stakes winners including Black Hawk (GB), who earned $5.7 million; Mil Kilates; Like A Hero; Lord Flasheart; Impending Bear; Nayyir(GB); Prospectress; Stylelistick; We Are Strike and Manila Magic. Even though Badge Of Silver is a smallish, quick-actioned colt, he is bred - top and bottom - to stay a classic distance of ground (10 furlongs and beyond), as he's a grandson of Deputy Minister out of a Silver Hawk mare.
