Trainer Patrick Biancone, reached at Keeneland Sunday morning, said that Brancusi sustained a small quarter crack in his right front during Saturday's running of the 129th Kentucky Derby. "It is a shame that it had to happen in the Derby but it is fortunate that it is not a knee or an ankle," said Biancone, who plans to ship the colt to New York next week.

BRANCUSI has been training in semi-seclusion at Keeneland and had his final piece of work for Derby 129 on the Lexington turf course after rains made the main track unsuitable to trainer Patrick Biancone. This is a very European approach but what is not so European is that Biancone and jockey Tony Farina tend to be on or near the lead with every runner. Interesting that the trainer chose the two post position at the draw when several better options were available and that guarantees that he will be prominent early or else face the dreaded scenario where 10 to 12 runners try to drop over right on top of him going into the first turn - so expect him to leave there running. Certainly has encouraging form as he has improved in each of his last three starts. Has the pedigree to run all day as he is by Deputy Commander out of an Alysheba mare - and many here don't. Not sure if he can work out a good trip on or near the lead but he is more attractive than many here and will come to the race ready to fire his best shot. Can't blame anyone for using him in second, third or fourth at attractive odds and if he will lay just off Indian Express without working too hard early, he has a slight chance to pull the upset. Nice prospect for the future bears watching. |

The dark bay or brown colt Brancusi is by Grade I mile and a quarter Travers Stakes Deputy Commander, an earner of $1.9 million at the races and the sire of three crops inlcuding the graded stakes places runners Holiday Lady, Brancusi and Ten Most Wanted and the listed stakes winner Virgin Voyage. The colt is out of Treize, an unraced daughter of Alysheba whose dam is the listed stakes winner Treizieme, who was also second in the Grade II Beverly Hills Handicap and is the dam oflisted Rushaway Stakes winner Oakmont. Brancusi's tail female line - in his third dam - traces back to Group II Yorkshire Cup winner Eastern Mystic and Grade I Santa Barbara Handciap winner Bequest. As a broodmare sire two-time champion and Horse of the Year Alysheba is the sire of 105 producing daughter and 24 stakes winners including the millionaires Air Eminem (Ire) and Grandera (Ire) in addition to the stakes winners Forty One Carats, Bright Sky (Ire), Anklet, Dynameaux, Voice Of Destiny, Alysweep, Ubiquity and Century City (Ire). This colt is bred top and bottom to thirve going a classic distance of ground on dirt, as he's by a Travers winner out of a mre who is by the dirt stayer Alysheba. The mile and a quarter distance of the Derby will be right up this colt's alley.
