Trainer Jeff Mullins said, "It is a pretty strong possibility we will go to Pimlico" with Buddy Gil after giving the Santa Anita Derby winner the once-over Sunday morning before heading back to California.
"He came out of the race good and we will give it a day or two," Mullins said. "I really have to decide by this afternoon because there is a plane to California on Monday. So, if he is still here tomorrow afternoon, there is a good chance he is staying."

BUDDY GIL is my pick to win Kentucky Derby 129. He will be attractive odds and has the heart of a champion - as evidenced by his super game wins in the three straight graded stakes in Southern California. This gelding ate so much dirt in the Santa Anita Derby that he was coughing it up in the test barn yet still ran through the bridle to surge to a head win over Indian Express, who was fighting back gamely on the rail. Son of Eastern Echo will be fighting the curse of the Damascus line and the curse of the geldings as well but I think both those angles are overrated statistics and the kind of thing you only hear Derby week. Cavonnier and Prairie Bayou are prime examples of geldings who nearly won the Derby and probably would have with slightly better racing luck. Trainer Jeff Mullins is having an incredible year with winning nearly a third of all his starts and he's been quietly confident in his runner, who has trained exceptionally well since arriving in Louisville. Probably the most compelling news from his camp has been the words and deeds of three-time Derby winning rider Gary Stevens, who flew in to work this horse on Hollywood Park's dark day and has repeatedly told press and fans that he has the goods to get the job done. Stevens may be the best rider alive and certainly can work out a trip for a horse with plenty of pace options. The expected price of 10 or 12 to 1 is highway robbery here. Take it to the bank with one who invents ways to win races and figures to put the overused Clyde Van Deusen gelding stat out of business. |

The bay gelding Buddy Gil is by Grade I Belmont Futurity winner Eastern Echo, a sire of 10 crops and 15 stakes winners including the graded stakes winners Swiss Yodeler and Western Echo and the listed stakes winners Yolo Lady, Eastern Daydream and Lady Of The Future. Buddy Gil is out of the minor stakes placed mare Really Rising, who is by For Really, a son of Buckaroo. Really Rising is out of the minor stakes winning mare Rising Writer, the dam of the Arizona stakes winner Hodson. As a broodmare sire, For Really is the sire of seven producing daughters and 13 foals, with Buddy Gil being his only stakes winner. Even though this gelding's sire, Eastern Echo, is the representative of a great old Rokeby Stable family laden with plenty of stamina influences, 10 furlongs may be pushing the distance limiations of his pedigree. Can see him getting a mile and a quarter on Kentucky Derby Day if the track is hard and fast. Anything beyond that is suspect based on his bloodlines.
