Champali drilled five furlongs in :59 4/5 under jockey Tammy Fox over a "fast" strip at Churchill Downs on Tuesday, Apr. 15 for trainer Greg Foley. The work was the son of Glitterman's final major turn-up for Saturday's (Apr. 19) Coolmore Lexington Stakes (GII) at Keeneland Race Course.
Louisville, Ky. resident Rob Lloyd, who manages the syndicate that owns Champali, said the Kentucky Derby (GI) is not under serious consideration.
"He'd have to run super in the Lexington, and then the planets would really have to line up the right way for us to even think about it," Lloyd told Daily Racing Form on Apr. 15.
The Coolmore Lexington field from the rail out with riders and odds: Scrimshaw (Prado) 10-1, Ministers Wild Cat (Espinoza) 7-2, Eye Of The Tiger (Robby Albarado) 15-1, Most Feared (Mark Guidry) 6-1, Domestic Dispute (Jerry Bailey) 9-2, Champali (Day) 4-1, Ocean Terrace (Shane Sellers) 6-1 and Trust N Luck (Velasquez) 3-1.

Born: February 12, 2002
Dosage Index: 6.33
The bay colt Champali is by Glitterman (representative of the Bold Ruler sire line), a sire of 10 crops at this writing and 21 stakes winners including millionaires Glitter Woman, winner of the Grade I Ashland Stakes; Balto Star, winner of the Grade II Spiral Stakes; Grade II Barbara Fritchie Handicap winner J J'sdream and the Grade III stakes winner Texas Glitter. Champali's dam, the Dixieland Band mare Radioactivity, who is the dam of four foals, all of which have made it to the racetrack and have won. Additionally, she is a half-sister to the Grade III, Irish-bred stakes winner Shemozzle (by Shirley Heights). As a broodmare sire, Dixieland Band, who is by the venerable Northern Dancer - winner of the 1964 Kentucky Derby - is the sire of 16 crops, 245 producing daughters and 46 black-tye winners including American Boss, who earned over $3 million; 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos; millionaire Dream Supreme and the additional stakes winners Exotic Wood, Futural, Adonis, Queen Of Wilshire, Two Punch Sonny, Promise Of War and Could Be. Even though Champali sports a high Dosage Index number (6.33), his sire throws versatile get - Balto Star and Glitter Woman were graded stakes winner going nine furlongs on dirt and Texas Glitter is a very quick graded stakes-winning turf sprinter - and he gets additional staying power from his broodmare sire, Dixieland Band, who not only is the dam sire of 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos but also is by 1964 Kentucky Derby winner Northern Dancer. I'm thinking Champali might be able to get a mile and a quarter, under the right pace scenario, with his stamina-induced distaff family.
