Six years ago Gary Capuano conditioned Captain Bodgit to victories in the Florida Derby (GI) and Wood Memorial Stakes (GI), a second place finish in the Kentucky Derby (GI) and a thrilling third place in the Preakness (GI). On Saturday, Apr. 19 he is back on the Triple Crown trail with Maryland-bred Cherokee’s Boy in the $150,000 Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico.
“If everything works well we’ll probably try the Preakness,” said Capuano, the younger brother of conditioner Dale Capuano. “The Derby is pretty much out. He doesn’t seem to fit with those kind of horses at this point.”
Cherokee’s Boy has won five of 11 career starts, including four restricted stakes victories, with earnings of $324,929. Against open company in added money races, the son of Citidancer has three third place finishes, including the Grade III Laurel Futurity last November, a race won by Toccet. Two weeks ago in the Grade II Illinois Derby he finished fifth.
“He really didn’t have a real excuse,” added Capuano. “My horse was in a perfect striking position and we moved to ‘em turning for home, but he just didn’t have enough.”
Ryan Fogelsonger will ride Cherokee’s Boy in the Tesio, which drew six starters.
“It is back a little quick but we are hoping things will work out for the Preakness,” said Capuano.
2002 Tesio runner-up Magic Weisner finished second in the 127th Preakness Stakes, while Preakness winner Deputed Testamony won this race in 1983. Other Tesio winners who have competed in the Visa Triple Crown include Broad Brush (1986), Private Terms (1988), Oliver’s Twist (1995) and Marciano (2001).
The Tesio will be shown on ESPN 2 between 6 and 7 p.m. as part of the NTRA’s Road To The Visa Triple Crown series.
The field for Saturday's Federico Tesio, in post postion order with weights and riders is High Watermark, 115, Mario Pino; Gimmeawink, 119, Clinton Potts; Cherokee's Boy, 119, Ryan Fogelsonger; Penobscot Bay, 115, Ramon Dominguez; Seattle Surprise, 117, no rider and Gang, 115, Anthony Mawing.

Coming Derby Week Born: March 1, 2000
    Dosage Index: 3.00
The homebred bay colt Cherokee's Boy is by Citidancer, a grandson of 1964 Kentucky Derby winner Northern Dancer (by Dixieland Band), one of the top stallions based in Maryland. He is the sire of 10 crops and 23 stakes winners including Grade I Ashland Stakes victress Urbane, Grade I stakes winner Hookedonthefeelin, the graded stakes winners Disco Rico and Latin Dancer and the listed stakes winner Short Stay. Cherokee's Boy, a son of Pleasant Colony, winner of the 1981 Kentucky Derby, is out of the hard-knocking stakes-winning mare Cherokee Wonder, who is the dam of two foals - Cherokee's Boy and the minor stakes-placed filly Runnin Wonder. The bay colt traces back to the crack Australian mare Bravey in his tail female line and the sire of his dam's sire is Pleasant Colony, a son of His Majesty and a reprsentative of the Ribot sire line, an excellent source for stamina. As a broodmare sire, Cherokee Colony is the sire of 12 crops and 47 producing daughters including the stakes winners Siphonic and Mountain Girl. Cherokee's Boy is inbred to both Northern Dancer and Native Nancer and has the pedigree to stay a 10-furlong trip.
