Bob and Beverly Lewises' Composure, who was pointing for an engagement on the Apr. 5 Ashland Stakes (GI) at Keeneland, will be retired from racing after suffereing a fractured sesamoid in her right front leg.
"We're gravely disappointed," Bob Lewis told The Blood-Horse on Mar. 19. "Bob [Baffert] called me on Tuesday (Mar. 18) and told me they had discovered swelling in her foot, which turned out to be an ever so slight crack in the sesamoid. She had shown no signs of it racing in the Santa Anita Oaks (Mar. 8), but it showed up on Tuesday. Bob [Baffert] said he had gotten a call from the barn at 5:30 in the morning. He's always hesitant to receive a call at that hour, because it's always bad news.
"The prognosis for recovery is fine, but she wouldn't be able to make it back for eight to 10 months, and we decided it was best to retire her. She was such a magnificent filly," Lewis continued. "It's really a tragedy, but you have to accept things like that in this game. I know it doesn't relieve the ache and the pain of losing a filly like Composure, but we do have Santa Catarina, whom we'll point for the Kentucky Oaks. I'm not ready to make a decision on where Composure is going to go [for broodmare duties], but we do have one farm in mind at this point."
"It's just devastating," Baffert added. "Fillies like her are difficult to come by. She was such a big, beautiful mare. We noticed her foot was a little bit sensitive, and there was some heat and swelling. X-rays showed a tiny hairline fracture. We weighed out options as far as bringing her back, but by the time it healed, she would have missed the Breeders' Cup. I'm going to try to talk Bob [Lewis] into breeding her to Silver Charm."
Composure won both her starts this year - the Grade I Las Virgenes and the Grade I Santa Anita Oaks - and amassed career earnings of $731,300.

The bay filly Composure is by millionaire Touch Gold, a sire of one crop to race with this filly being his only stakes winner at this writing. While the jury is still out on Touch Gold as a stallion prospect, he certainly has all the makings of an influential sire, as he's well-bred (by Deputy Minister out of a Buckpasser mare) and was a fine racehorse (won the Haskell Invitational (GI) and Belmont Stakes (GI)). This miss is out of a classy racemare as well, as Party Cited won the Grade III Yerba Buena Handicap for owner Gary Tanaka and has foaled the minor European stakes performer Palatial Affaire in addition to Composure. Party Cited is by the classy sire Alleged who, as a broodmare sire, is the sire of 341 producing daughters and 111 stakes winners including champions Dr. Devious, Suave Dancer, Dream Well, Go And Go, Suave Tern, George Augustus and Mongol Warrior in addition to millionaires Hishi Natalie, Shinko King and Wind Fields. Composure came within a half-length of beating soon-to-be champion juvenile filly Storm Flag Flying in her first start at a nine-furlong trip that she's bred, top and bottom, to relish. The 10 furlong distance of the Kentucky Derby is not out of the question either for this filly based on her pedigree, as she's a granddaughter of Deputy Minister out of an Alleged mare, the product of a stamina-on-stamina cross or nick.
