Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel said his 2-3 finishers in Kentucky Derby 129, Juddmonte Farm's Empire Maker and Edmund Gann's Peace Rules, appeared to have come out of the race well. Frankel said he's doing OK, too after three weeks of intense media scrutiny as the trainer of the Kentucky Derby favorite.

"I've been more nervous going into other races than I was this race, to be honest with you," said a smiling Frankel. "I wasn't that bad - and I came out of it good, just like the horses. I came out sound."

Frankel said he is leaning toward sending Peace Rules to Pimlico for the Preakness, but would not rule out a bid for the second jewel of the Visa Triple Crown by Empire Maker. A run by the latter would depend on what the son of Unbridled does over the next few days.

"Peace Rules is a very, very tough horse," he said. "Empire Maker is a little immature still. He still hasn't developed. You can see his body - he's gangly, he's a little light. Peace Rules is a very, very strong horse."

Frankel said there is a tiny chance that Gann's Derby Trial (GIII) winner Midas Eyes could try the Preakness, but said the 3-year-old son of Touch Gold was more probable for a run against older horses in the prestigious Metropolitan Handicap (GI) at Belmont Park.

A quick three-wide move on the far turn by jockey Jerry Bailey and Empire Maker had Frankel thinking that he was about to win his elusive first Kentucky Derby, but the trainer said those thoughts evaporated at about the three-sixteenths pole when it became clear that the Derby favorite was struggling and was not going to pass eventual winner Funny Cide.

"I thought he was going to win at that time (at the three-eighths pole), I really thought he was going to win," he said. "He might have been struggling with the track a little it, but you don't know. Hey, a lot of great horses got beat here and they went on to be super horses. I'm not down on him. That was only his sixth start. He's an immature horse and I never pressed him hard and, just hopefully, now he's had this race and he'll just keep on improving as the year goes along."

Frankel had expressed hopes before the Kentucky Derby that Empire Maker had qualities that would make him a threat to win not only the Derby, but to take the Visa Triple Crown for the first time in 25 years. With that chance dashed for Frankel this year, the trainer was asked if he thought he would ever see another Triple Crown winner.

"I hope so - I hope I live long enough," he said. "They've only done once in the last 25 or 30 years and then three in a row did it. I thought this year was the year to start it - but maybe next year."

And what of Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide's Triple Crown chances?

"I'm trying not to let him do it," Frankel said.

EMPIRE MAKER is a racehorse of incredible potential who has just begun to put things together with the addition of blinkers coming into the Florida Derby, which saw him produce a 108 Beyer Speed Figure in just his fourth career start. Followed that up with a deceptively easy win in the Wood Memorial, when Jerry Bailey rode him very confidently while reluctant to even hit him late despite a nagging Funny Cide to his inside. That easy hand ride produced a 111 Beyer and he figures to take another step forward here as they set him down for the drive and ask him for his all. Much talk this week about a bruised foot or possibly more but there is always a strong rumor mill Derby week and one thing is for sure - Bobby Frankel wouldn't lead him over unless he is right and ready to go because there is much too much to lose on one who figure to bring $50 to $75 million as a stallion. His mother is the Blue Hen mare of our time and continues to throw graded stakes winners like Chester House and Honest Lady, though sometimes they can be a bit of a head case as she was herself. Frankel knows the family well having trained the entire line and has been preparing this colt to win the Derby since the day of his birth. Trainer has avoided the Derby, running only Aptitude and Medaglia D'Oro despite a high profile career and has come to town this year with two live shots. Took him a while to kick down the door to the Breeders' Cup winner's circle but the Derby win seems squarely in his sights. If this horse can handle himself in a circus atmosphere and work out a clean trip under Jerry Bailey - he will win the race. Now whether he is worth the 6-5 price is entirely for you to decide and as everyone knows - the favorite rarely wins the Derby. Possible you will see a superstar in the making Saturday the likes of which haven't been seen since Seattle Slew or even Secretariat. Born: April 27, 2000
    Dosage Index: 1.88
The regally-bred Empire Maker is bred top and bottom to thrive going a classic distance of ground (10 furlongs and beyond), as he's by 1990 Kentucky Derby winner and champion Unbridled out of the crack racemare and blue hen broodmare Toussaud. Champion Unbridled earned nearly $4.5 million on the racetrack and was the sire of eight crops and 30 stakes winners prior to his death last October, including champions Banshee Breeze and Anees as well as millionaires Red Chili Pepper, Lady Ballade, Unshaded and Unbridled's Song. Empire Maker is out of the crown jewel of the Juddmonte Farm broodmare band - Toussaud - a multiple graded stakes winner on turf for trainer Bobby Frankel (Grade I Gamely handicap, etc.) and a full-sister to the Grade III stakes winner Navara. From the six foals that Toussaud has dropped, all of them made it to the racetrack and four are graded stakes winners - Arlington Million (GI) victor Chester House (by Mr. Prospector); Santa Monica Handicap (GI) winner Honest Lady (by Seattle Slew); Secretariat Stakes (GI) winner Chiselling (by Woodman) and Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap (GII) victor Decarchy (by Distant View). It's worth noting that Tousaud has a two-year-old filly of 2003 by Seeking The Gold. Empire Maker's impeccable bloodlines continue throughout his distaff family, as his second dam is the graded stakes winner Image Of Reality, who is not only the dam of the aforementioned graded stakes winning sisters Navara and Toussaud, but also of Grade III Jefferson Cup winner Indygo Shiner and the listed stakes winner Image Of Class. As a broodmare sire, El Gran Senor is the sire of 105 producing daughters and 28 stakes winners including Chester House, Grand Slam, Honest Lady, Vicar, Laredo, Decarchy, Indygo Shiner, Chiselling, Tippity Witch and Leestown. If he makes it in the starting gate on May 3, Empire Maker will relish the mile and a quarter distance of Kentucky Derby 129.
