Churchill Downs officials were notified on Tuesday, Apr. 22 that Moyglare Stud Farm's Irish-bred Evolving Tactics (Ire) is scheduled to ship to the United States later this week (week of Apr. 21) for a possible run in Kentucky Derby (GI) 129.
The son of Machiavellian scored the first victory of his three-race career on Monday (Apr. 21) at Ireland's Cork race course for trainer Dermot Weld, and is tentatively scheduled to fly from East Midlands airport in Britain to New York's JFK on Saturday, April 26. Evolving Tactics (Ire) is scheduled to clear customs and undergo USDA blood tests in New York before the colt flies to Cincinnati. He will then travel by van for quarantine at Keeneland and the colt is expected to travel to Churchill Downs when he clears quarantine.
Weld has enjoyed U.S. success with a victory by Go and Go in the 1990 Belmont Stakes (GI) and also trains Refuse To Bend, a Moyglare colt who is considered a major contender for Britain's 2,000 Guineas (GI). He has never saddled a horse in the Kentucky Derby.
Evolving Tactics, an early nominee to the Visa Triple Crown, scored a two-length victory over Sharesha in a one-mile maiden race on Monday for 3-year-olds on grass. He completed the distance in 1:39.30. Weld's colt had finished third to the Aidan O'Brien-trained Dalcassian a one-mile race at The Curragh on April 3 in his only previous race of the year. The colt finished eighth behind New South Wales in his only start at two, which also came in a one-mile race at the Curragh.

The bay, Irish-bred colt Evolving Tactics (Ire) is by a champion juvenile in Europe, Machiavellian, the sire of 10 crops and 39 stakes winners including champions Titus Livius (Fr), Whitewater Affair (GB), Susu (GB), Mudallel (GB) and Kokuto Julian (GB), an earner of $2.3 million at the races and Street Cry, winner of the Grade I Stephen Foster Handicap. He is out of the stakes winning Alzao (by Lyphard) mare Token Gesture, winner of the Group III C.L. Weld Park Stakes and a half-sister to Bay Meadows Handicap (GII) victor Wait Till Monday (Ire). This colt sports a tail female line laden with black type, as his third dam is Magazine, winner of the Coaching Club American Oaks (GI) and dam of Group III Nell Gwyn Stakes winer Martha Stevens and h traces back to the stakes winner Lake George, Heptathlon, Lazer Show, marked Tree and Argyle Lake in his fourth dam. As a broodmare sire, Alzao is the sire of 202 producing daughters and 30 stakes winners including champion Embassy (Ire) and the additional stakes winners Ballin Eric (GB), Veil Of Avalon, Shaanmer (Ire), Nordican Inch (GB), Smirk (GB), Balakberi (Ire), Bollin Joanne (GB), Tarfshi (GB) and Hoh Dear (Ire). He's is inbred to Almahmoud, a blue-hen broodmare whose principal descendents include the top-class stakes winners/sires Tosmah, Catrail, L'Emigrant, Cannonade, Lotka, Halo, Flawlessly, Northern Dancer, La Prevoyante, Machiavelian and Arctic Tern. Though he has never run on dirt and his bloodlines are more favorable for the turf, Evolving Tactics (Ire) does have enough dirt route influences in his pedigree to suggest that he'll be able to stay a mile and a quarter on dirt. The ship and the class hike to Grade I stakes company seem to be this colt's real obstacles, not a mile and a quarter trip.
