Michael Tabor's Hold That Tiger will not run in the Castlemartin & La Louviere Studs Gladness Stakes (Gr. III) at The Curragh in County Kildare, Ireland on April 6, 2003 and is now likely to go directly to Newmarket, England for the English 2,000 Guineas (Gr. I) on May 3, the same day as the 129th running of the Kentucky Derby (GI) at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
"We are not going to run Hold That Tiger on Sunday and instead he will work after racing," trainer Aidan O'Brien told England's Racing Post on Thursday, Apr. 3. "We would like to have run him this weekend but to carry a Group I penalty against older horses is very difficult and it can leave its mark. It might not be fair to ask Hold That Tiger to do so and we are probably going to run Marino Marini in the race."
When asked by the Racing Post if Hold That Tiger would run again before the 2,000 Guineas, the trainer replied "he probably won't".
O'Brien also made reference to the plight of past Ballydoyle 3-year-olds facing older rivals in the Gladness, as Johannesburg lost the race last year by a short head and Desert King, Chateau Royal, Perigee Moon and Black Rock Desert were also defeated in the race. Giant's Causeway, who won the 2000 renewal of the race, has been O'Brien's only Gladness winner.
