Trainer Todd Pletcher took some lumps on Saturday (Apr. 12), first when Indy Dancer ran sixth in the Wood Memorial (GI) and later on when Lion Tamer ran sixth in the Blue Grass (GI) and Aristocat ran eighth in the Arkansas Derby (GII). Pletcher was the only trainer to start a horse in all three Big 3 Pick 3 races.
"[Jockey] Johnny Velazquez said that Indy Dancer didn’t handle the track at all at Aqueduct," Pletcher said. "[Jockey] Rene Douglas said Aristocat was fighting the track at Oaklawn the whole way and never got going. Lion Tamer got off slow, then rushed up in there, leveled off, got into some trouble, finally got into position and then flattened out. "They all came back good, but here is nothing else for us to do but to pack them all up and give them a little break. Eventually, they will all wind up in New York."

Indy Dancer is by the top-class stallion, Horse of the Year and champion A.P. Indy, a sire of eight crops and 44 stakes winners including champion Tempera; Horse of the Year Festival Of Light; Grade I Pimlico Special winner Golden Missle, an earner of over $2 million at the races; and millionaires Symboli Lady and Aptitude. Indy Dancer is out of the stakes winning Mr. Prospector mare Dance With Grace, who is a full sister to the European stakes winner Dance Sequence, the multiple graded stakes winner Souvenir Copy and the Japanese stakes winner Shake Hand. This well-bred colt's tail female line traces back to the likes of graded stakes winners Doneraile Court, Dazzle, Advancing Star, Early Pioneer and Excellent Meeting. As a broodmare sire, the late sire of sires Mr. Prospector is the sire of 438 producing daughters and 240 stakes winners including champions Hollywood Wildcat, Dayjur, Lailani (GB), Tempera, Green Tune, Fasliyev, Golden Option, Pas de Reponse, State Shinto and Minardi. Indy Dancer is a grandson of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew by the stayer A.P. Indy. He's also inbred to Nasrullah (by Italian champion Nearco), the champion 2-year-old colt in England and the sire of nine horses that were recognized by official voting as champions of their divisions. These included Horses of the Year Nashua and Bold Ruler. Nasrullah led the sire list five times, in 1955, 1956, 1959, 1960, and 1962. Indy Dancer is a late runner who acts like he's screaming for more ground, and he's compromised over the winter by Gulfstream Park's main track, which tends to favor speed. He figures to relish 10 furlongs and Churchill's long stretch.
