Bob Baffert's two Derby hopes, Indian Express and Kafwain, worked in company Tuesday (Apr. 29) morning, stopping the clock in :59 3/5 for five furlongs. However, Kafwain apparently was injured in the drill and will not run in the Derby. "He's out," Baffert said. "He didn't cool out well and we started to look at what happened. We don't know exactly what's wrong, but it looks like a check ligament in his right front. We'll have him X-rayed to find out." The defection of Kafwain leaves Baffert with just one Derby hope. At one point, he had three prospects, but announced this morning that Senor Swinger, who has been a Derby possible all week, will go in Friday's Crown Royal American Turf (GIII). Indian Express and Kafwain worked as a team, coming out right after the break, and Indian Express stayed a neck or head in front the whole trip. Baffert was especially pleased with the way Indian Express drilled. The colt was on the inside the whole way with exercise rider Dana Barnes aboard. He went along in splits of :12 1/5, :24, :35 4/5 and :47 4/5, and galloped out six furlongs in 1:12 4/5. "That was his best work ever," Baffert said. "I'm getting kinda excited about him. He was in front the whole way, but that's his style. He looked good out there." Indian Express is by Indian Charlie, who ran third in the 1998 Kentucky Derby. The Utah-bred began his racing career in Panama, and Baffert purchased the colt privately late last year for $150,000. Indian Express, owned by Phil Chess, came into the Baffert barn in December. "He's improved a lot since we first got him, and this work showed me he's improved since the Santa Anita Derby (GI)," Baffert said. "I like what I see in him, and I feel good about leading him up there. He's only got one style, so we'll send him to the front and he'll go as far as he can." The Santa Anita Derby on April 5 was Indian Express's first try around two turns, and the colt ran gamely along the rail, dropping a head decision to Buddy Gil. Tyler Baze, who was aboard in that race, has the call for his first Derby mount. Kafwain ran in the shadow of stablemate Vindication all last year, and finished second to the champion colt in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (GI). This year he had won the San Vicente (GII) and run second in the Louisiana Derby (GII) before finishing third in the Santa Anita Derby. He was to have been ridden in the Kentucky Derby by Pat Valenzuela, who has not had a Derby mount since he finished 15th aboard Union City in 1993. 4.20.2003 - Kafwain Video Workout

Pedigree Analysis By: John Gaver III
Coming Derby Week Born: February 24, 2000
    Dosage Index: 3.00
An early February foal, Kafwain is by champion sprinter and millionaire Cherokee Run (by Runaway Groom), a sire of four crops and 12 stakes winners including millionaire and champion Chilukki and the graded stakes winners Feathers, Yonaguska and Dream Run in addition to the listed stakes winner Dash For Daylight. Kafwain is out of the crack racemare Swazi's Moment, a stakes winner in Kentucky and California, and she's the dam of three foals, all of which have made it to the racetrack and have won. As a broodmare sire, Moment Of Hope, a son of Timeless Moment, has sired 41 producing daughters and, along with Kafwain, the following stakes winners: Dream Launcher, Imageofhope, Just In Flight and Carnival Messiah (Tri). Kafwain is a hard-knocker who endured a strenuous juvenile campaign and wille he finished well in the mile and an eighth Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Arlington Park in 2002, he wasn't gaining significant ground on stablemate Vindication and this colt's pedigree doesn't have your "typical" stayer bloodlines, as he's by a horse who was at his best in sprints out of a dam whose sire is a representative of the Damascus sire line, generally regarded as a source of speed in Thoroughbred bloodlines. Kafwain is a very versatile racehorse, having notched graded stakes wins around a single turn and two turns. I confess, after reading a piece by The Blood-Horse's Steve Haskin, a Trple Crown guru and pedigree expert to say the least, I felt compelled to come back and revise my assesment of Kafwain's pedigree based on Haskin's analysis. The fact is, Kafwain has stamina infuences in in pedigree, starting with his sire, Cherokee Run, who, like Kafwain, was a very versatile racehorse. Sure he won the Breeders' Cup Sprint and was at his best around a single turn, but he was only beaten a half-length in the mile and three-sixteenth Preakness while breaking from the 12-hole. On top of that, Kafwain's tail female line (the line tracing from Kafwain's dam, to her dam, to her dam, and so on back to the original root stallion), as Haskin astutely pointed out, can be mined for stamina. His second dam's sire is the hard-knocking Greentree Stable campaigner Hatchet Man, who not only beat Forego in the mile and a quarter Hasklell Invitational, but also is the dam sire of Kentucky Derby winner Strike The Gold. Going deeper into Kafwain's pedigree, one finds that his third dam is by Quack, who held the world's record on dirt for a mile and a quarter (1:58 1/5) before it was broken by Spectacular Bid. Quack's time, when winning the Hollywood Gold Cup, is still the fastest ever run by a 3-year-old. On the surface, it seems as if Kafwain's pedigree is short on stamina infuences but if one digs deeper, like Mr. Haskin did, one can make an argument that this colt has enough staying power in his bloodlines to get ten furlongs, especially on a "fast" Churchill Downs strip on Derby Day.
