Man Among Men, who finished 10th in the Arkansas Derby (GII) as the 5-2 favorite, suffered cuts on his right front leg in the race and will not run in the Kentucky Derby (GI) on May 3, trainer Gary Mandella said Sunday (Apr. 13) morning.
"He kind of got run over top of on the clubhouse turn," Mandella said of the son of Gentlemen, who defeated Derby favorite Empire Maker in the Feb. 7 Sham Stakes.
"He cut his leg, grabbed a quarter and cut his foot pretty bad. It was not a clean trip, but we scoped him after the race and he did not bleed, but we’re not going to any of the big races right off the bat," Mandella said. "We’ll bring him home and see what’s best, but the Kentucky Derby is out."

Man Among Men is a robust chestnut colt by Gentlemen (Arg), a two-time champion who was trained by Gary Mandella's father, Richard. The younger Mandella was an assistant for his father while Gentlemen was running, so he's very familar with the characteristics of this colt's sire. Gentlemen, who was bred in Argentina, earned over $3 million on the racetrack and is the sire of two crops with Man Among Men being his only stakes winner to date. Man Among Men is out of the French-bred mare La Favorita, who was a minor stakes winner in both North America and Europe and Group II stakes placed in Europe. La Favorita is also a full sister to the French stakes winner Clodion. La Favorita is by the English-bred sire Nikos (GB), who, as a broodmare sire is the sire of 52 producing daughters with Man Among Men being his only stakes winner. As a sire, Nikos (GB) has 14 crops and 11 stakes winners including two-time French champion Nononito (Fr) and the stakes winner Le Conquet (Fr). Man Among Men is bred top and bottom to stay a classic distance of ground (10 furlongs and beyond) and even though his distaff family is predominatly turf route oriented, he is inbred 4X4 to Graustark, a son of the great Ribot, who was a stakes winner at distances from 7 1/2 furlongs to 15 furlongs. Man Among Men's distaff family also traces back to the immortal stayer Sea Bird, who owns the all-time highest Timeform ranking in Europe of 145, and his dam sire traces back to the great Neartic (via Nonoalco). This colt will savor a mile and a quarter should he go postward in Kentucky Derby 129.
