Ken & Sarah Ramsey's 3-year-old turf star Nothing To Lose suffered a stress fracture of the left shin during a recent workout at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. and will be on the sidelines indefinitely. The son of Sky Classic will miss all three Triple Crown races.
"He worked well, but he came out of it a little uncomfortable," the colt's trainer, D. Wayne Lukas, told The Blood-Horse. "I told them to take a picture and it showed the stress fracture."
"It's non-displaced, which is the best scenario," Lukas told Daily Racing Form from Santa Anita on Mar. 4. "It's probably going to need some attention."
Lukas said the highly-regarded veterinarian Dr. Larry Bramlage would further examine the colt at Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic in Lexington, Ky. "I don't think it's anything that's going to stop him [completely] but it'll stop him for a while."
The colt's last public work was a five furlong move in 1:00 3/5, breezing, over a "fast" strip at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. on Mar. 2.

The bay Ramsey homebred Nothing to Lose is by four-time champion Sky Classic, an earner of over $3 million at the races and the son of the great Nijinsky II (138 Timeform rating), a group stakes winner in Europe at distances from seven to 14 1/2-furlongs. Sky Classic is the sire of eight crops and 31 stakes winners at this writing including Canadian Horse of the Year, champion and millionaire Thornfield; the graded stakes winners Stage Classic, Daylight Savings and Illiquidity; and the listed stakes winner Crimson Classic. Nothing To Lose is out of the Clever Trick mare Cherlindrea, a listed stakes winner and the dam of eight foals to race, seven of which are winners with Nothing To Lose being her only black-type earner. As a broodmare sire, Clever Trick, a son of Icecapade, is the sire of 295 producing daughters and 57 stakes winners including millionaire's Came Home, Towa Treasure (Jpn) and Yes It's True and the additional stakes winners French Braids, Roamin Rachel, A.P. Assay, Dynamic Trick, Tricky, She's A Caper Too and Sophisticatedcielo. Nothing To Lose's tail female line traces back to a quality Phipps broodmare family via the champion Lady Pitt, the dam of the multiple graded stakes winner Blitey, who is the dam of grade one stakes winners Dancing Spree, Furlough, and Fantastic Find and the granddam of grade one winners Heavenly Prize and Finder's Fee. Nothing To Lose is inbred to Neartic, the sire of 1964 Kentucky Derby winner Northern Dancer, and is an example of a stamina-on-speed cross or nick. This colt will be able to stay the 10 furlong distance of the Kentucky Derby, the question with him is can he transfer his sharp turf form (and turf-oriented pedigree) to the main track?
