Ocean Terrace, who was a disappointing last, beaten 47 1/2 lengths in the Santa Anita Derby (GI) in his last start, arrived at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Ky. on Tuesday, Apr. 15 from his home base at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. Ocean Terrace will go postward in Saturday's (Apr. 19) Coolmore Lexington Stakes (GII) at Keeneland in order to try and earn a berth in the May 3 Kentucky Derby.
"Without sounding desperate, this [running in the Lexington] is an effort to try and vicndicate the horse," trainer Bob Hess, Jr. told Daily Racing Form on Apr. 15.
Hess went on to say that while Ocean Terrace bled slightly through Lasix in the Santa Anita Derby, the bleeding wasn't bad enough for him to finish that badly and he has since been given a variety of diagnostic tests that have come back negative.
"We're searching," Hess continued. "We took X-rays, did a nuclear scan, scoped him, and all we found was a touch of blood."
Immediately after the race, Hess was furious with the ride that jockey Kent Desormeaux had given his charge in the Santa Anita Derby, however the rider and trainer - who are good friends - have since patched things up.
"I love horses," Desormeaux told the Form on Apr. 15. "I've been riding all my life. I know when a horse is in distress. One day they [Ocean Terrace's connections] might realize that the reason they can make the Lexington is because I took care of their horse."
Hess agreed. "Had Kent not wrapped up and eased him up, we wouldn't be talking about the Lexington," said Hess. "Kent took care of him."
Ministers Wild Cat will be equipped with blinkers for the first time in the Lexington; Victor Espinoza will ride.
The Coolmore Lexington field from the rail out with riders and odds: Scrimshaw (Prado) 10-1, Ministers Wild Cat (Espinoza) 7-2, Eye Of The Tiger (Robby Albarado) 15-1, Most Feared (Mark Guidry) 6-1, Domestic Dispute (Jerry Bailey) 9-2, Champali (Day) 4-1, Ocean Terrace (Shane Sellers) 6-1 and Trust N Luck (Velasquez) 3-1.

Ocean Terrace, a $700,000 yearling purchase, is by Saint Ballado, a Grade II stakes winning son of Halo who is the sire of 8 crops and 37 stakes winners including Grade I Florida Derby winner Captain Bodgit; Grade I Metropolitan Handicap winner Yankee Victor; Grade I Hemspstead Handicap winner Sister Act and the precocious Del Mar Futurity (GII) winner Flame Thrower. He is out of a stakes winning daughter of Horse of the Year Black Tie Affair, Crystal River, whose lone foal to race is Ocean Terrace. Crystal River, who is out of the fine broodmare Brunswick Dawn, is a half sister to six stakes winners including Let's Go Blue, champion older horse in Canada and Divisa, a Group III stakes winner in Germany. Irish-bred Black Tie Affair is the sire of 113 producing daughters including the stakes winner Mike's Wildcat. Ocean Terrace is bred top and bottom to thrive going a distance of ground, as his sire throws stayers (Captain Bodgit) as well as precocious, athletic types (Flame Thrower) and is a representative of the Halo sire line, generally regarded as a source of stamina in Thoroughbred bloodlines. Futhermore, Ocean Terrace's dam sire - Black Tie Affair - won the mile and a quarter Breeders' Cup Classic (GI) at Churchill Downs. This colt is inbred to Mahmoud, winner of the Group I Epsom Derby for the Aga Khan. He should have litlle trouble staying 10 furlongs.
