Trainer T.V. Smith said Offlee Wild came out of the Derby in fine shape and that the colt's next start is undecided.
Smith was training his first Derby starter, as was Barclay Tagg, conditioner of Funny Cide.
"I am thrilled that if we couldn't win it, a guy like Barclay could," Smith said. "He broke all the rules. He didn't train over the track, he had never won a stake over a mile and he had the first gelding to win since 1929. That was great."

OFFLEE WILD has been patiently and intelligently managed by veteran trainer T.V. Smith, who is based at Churchill Downs yet has resisted the temptation to run horses in the Derby who don't belong despite an illustrious career. Got his ticket to Derby 129 in a son of Wild Again who got up for third in the Blue Grass Stakes after missing some time due to illness and minor injury in Florida. Prep race should set him up well and he is likely to stay the trip with Wild Again bred to a Seattle Slew mare. Main owner Landson Robbins is a Churchill regular who has been good for the local game by forming high-class syndicates and racing his good horses at Churchill and Keeneland. Main knock on this contender are his relatively light speed figures with a top Beyer of 99, when several here have regularly exceeded the century mark. Also not encouraging that Pat Day took off this runner after the Blue Grass to ride Ten Most Wanted and his agent, Doc Danner, is a noted handicapper who rarely makes the wrong call. Does like the track with a 2-1-1-0 record here as a young horse but he will need luck and the race of his life to hit the board. Willing to play against but wish his connections all the best with a fine racehorse. |

Offlee Wild is a dark bay or brown Wild Again colt that bears a striking resemblance, especially in his head, to his father, a son of Icecapade who won the Breeders' Cup Classic (GI) and earned $2.2 million on the racetrack. He is the sire of 15 crops and 75 stakes winners including the champions Wilderness Song, Free At Last, Born Wild, Blizzard and Super I. Offlee Wild is out of the Seattle Slew mare Alevar, a full sister to the stakes winner White Bridle, and he sports an impeccable tail female line. His second dam is Andover Way, winner of the Grade I Top Flight Handicap and the dam of the aforementioned White Bridle; the graded stakes winner Supremo and the multiple graded stakes winner and fine sire Dynaformer. As a broodmare sire, three-time champion, Horse of the Year and Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew is the sire of 338 producing daughters including three-time champion Cigar, who earned $7.5 million on the racetrack and the additional champions Seeking The Pearl, Lemon Drop Kid, Hishi Akebono, Mulca and Golden Attraction, not to mention the top-class stakes performers Agnes World, Escena, Raging Fever and Astra. Offlee Wild is inbred to Hyperion, whose male descendants in America included Swaps, Pensive, Chateaugay, Kelso, Forego, and Exceller. This colt is bred top and bottom to thrive in route races and as the distances increase along the Triple Crown trail, the more this colt figures to move forward, from a pdeigree perspective.
