Domino Stud's Sir Cherokee, winner of the Arkansas Derby (GII), has suffered an injury to his right rear ankle and will be scratched from Saturday's Kentucky Derby. Trainer Mike Tomlinson said the injury was detected Thursday (May 1) following a gallop by the son of Cherokee Run at Churchill Downs Trackside Louisville Training Center. "He wasn't completely comfortable in his gallop," said Tomlinson. "We took a look at it, took an X-ray and found a small fracture is his right rear (leg)." Tomlinson said the injury is neither serious nor life threatening but the timing is very bad. "It's a bitter pill to swallow," he said. "We were excited about his chances. It's disappointing and we will be back." He will be out of action for 60-90 days and is expected to resume serious training in three to four months.

SIR CHEROKEE may be the livest of all the longshots after his exhilarating late run in the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn. Morning line maker Mike Battaglia reacted to all the talk about this horse and laid him a relatively low number at 15-1 but he figures to exceed that greatly by post time and has a lot of merit. Has the running style to come late and pick up the pieces if able to avoid traffic and veteran Terry Thompson has been around long enough that he should handle the Derby hubbub well, maybe better than some of the younger riders who are making their first attempt. Trainer Mike Tomlinson is vastly underrated and has kept his charge away from all the hype and press while stabled at Trackside across town, much like Perfect Drift last year. Earned a 106 Beyer Speed Figure for the Arkansas Derby win and will need to pair up or exceed that effort, which was much, much faster than his previous runs. Won his maiden on the local dirt and posted a very solid fourth in the Kentucky Jockey Club in his stakes debut in his second start under the Twin Spires. Son of Cherokee Run would be pushing his distance limit on paper but the way he won the Arkansas Derby it should not be an issue. Plenty to like about this longshot with the preferred running style. He'll hit the board with any luck and will add value to exotic wagers. |

Arkansas Derby (GII) winner Sir Cherokee is by the champion sprinter Cherokee Run, a horse that was more of a miler than a speed-crazed sprinter on the racetrack. Cherokee Run is the sire of five crops and 13 stakes winners including the champion filly Chilukki; the multiple graded stakes winner and top 3-year-old Kafwain; Grade I Hopeful Stakes winner Yonaguska; Dream Run, winner of the Grade II Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship and the graded stakes winner Feathers. This colt is out of the mare La Cucina (by the Irish-bred Last Tycoon), who is also the dam of the minor stakes placed filly Lady Linda. Sir Cherokee's tail female line traces back to the English stakes winner Ocean Air in his second dam, the minor stakes winner Cordial Prince in his third dam and to the blue-hen broodmare Shy Dancer - the dam of the stakes winner Lady Dulcinea, Shy Dawn, Petite Rouge and Champagne Charlie - and the granddam of such major stakes winners as Heavenly Cause, Quixotic Lady, Jacques Who, Opening Verse, So She Sleeps, Dangerous Dawn and Princess Arjumand - in his fourth dam. As a broodmare sire, the Irish-bred Last Tycoon (Ire) is the sire of 165 producing daughters and 32 stakes winners including The Deputy (Ire), Self Feeder (Ire), Island House (Ire), Keltos (Fr), Sharpest Image (Ire), Grey Risk (Fr), Iridanos (GB), Tycoon's Dolce (Ire) and Desert Drama (Ire). Sir Cherokee is inbred to sire-of-sires Nasrullah, who sired nine horses that were recognized by official voting as champions of their divisions. These included Horses of the Year Nashua and Bold Ruler. Nasrullah led the sire list five times - in 1955, 1956, 1959, 1960, and 1962. Sir Cherokee is a son of a quality, versatile miler out of a dam whose family is loaded with stamina influences. He's bred to get a mile and a quarter and ran like he wanted more ground when winning the mile and an eighth Arkansas Derby on Apr. 12.
