Soto, who ended his juvenile campaign a perfect three-for-three with a one-length win in the Grade III Kentucky Jockey Club, is nursing a sore shin and was offically taken off the Visa Triple Crown trail on Jan. 21. The son of Dehere, who is trained by Michael Dickinson, had been under consideration for the Risen Star Stakes (GIII) at Fair Grounds on Feb. 16, but will now be stopped on until later this spring and will be pointed to major stakes races this summer. "He came out of the Kentucky Jockey Club with a sore shin, which was rather surprising since it was late in his two-year-old season," said Dr. David Lambert, who serves as the U.S. racing manager for Soto's owners, German-based Gallop LLC. "While the shin has been getting better, we had to think about pushing him to make the Triple Crown," Lambert said. "On his pedigree, we decided he wouldn't be the most natural horse to stay a mile and a quarter. It's in the best interest of the horse and the owner to give him plenty of time and get him ready for the mid-summer stakes. He's a Grade 2 winner, and our next objective is a Grade 1." Soto is currently in light training at Dickinson's Tapeta Training Center in Maryland. Off Visa Triple Crown trail

    Dosage Index: 4.14
The chestnut colt Soto is by the juvenile champion Dehere, a fashionable, relatively young stallion who is the sire of champions Belle Du Jour (Aus) and Mi Amigo Guelo, Grade I winner Take Charge Lady, Grade II winners Graeme Hall and Finality and the listed stakes winners Easyfromthegitgo and Outta Here. As successful as Dehere has been in the breeding shed, his get are not known to stay classic distances of ground, in fact nine furlongs seems to be the distance limitation of his progeny (Take Charge Lady won the nine furlong Ashland Stakes at Keeneland and Graeme Hall [has the same nick has Soto as he's by Dehere out of a Crafty Prospector mare] won the nine-furlong Arkansas Derby). To add to Soto's classic ditance limitation from a pedigree perspective, he is out of a daughter of Craft Prospector, a son of Mr. Prospector (Raise A Native line) who is best known for throwing sprinters. Crafty Prospector is the sire of 199 producing daughters and 31 black type winners including champion Intikhab, millionaires Big Shori (Jpn) and Graeme Hall and the stakes winners Cimarron Secret, Las Mistica, Icecoldbeeratreds, Controlled and Secret Liaison.
