Awesome Again - Cozzene's Angel (Cozzene)

Owner: Daniel M. Borislow

Trainer: John F. Scanlan

Jockey: Jorge Chavez

Breeder: Daniel M. Borislow (Ky.)

Recent Developments

Scrap Book
Dan Borislow's Toccet, who was taken out of training earlier in the year with what veterinarians diagnosed as remodeling of the ankles, and subsequently suffered a slight bruise to his right front foot on Feb. 22 after returning to training has officially been withdrawn from consideration for the May 3 Kentucky Derby and will point for the Preakness and Belmont Stakes instead. With his recent bruise, Borislow decided it wasn't fair to the horse to rush him in order to make the Derby.
"It would be too hard on him if we pushed him to make the race, and we want to do what's right for the horse," Borislow told The Blood-Horse's Steve Haskin on Feb. 27. "I learned from my Derby experience with Talk is Money [17th and last in Derby 127]. I've been there, done that, and I don't need to get caught up in the excitement if it's not in Toccet's best interest. We're looking at either the Lexington Stakes [Apr. 19] or Derby Trial [Apr. 26] or Withers Stakes [May 3] as a prep for the Preakness. But I think he's a natural Belmont horse and that's our main goal.
"You wouldn't recognize him," Borislow continued. "He's always been a magnificent looking horse, but he is so unbelievable looking now, he's put on so much muscle."
The son of Awesome Again will remain with trainer John Scanlan at Laurel Park and is expected to resume training in the near future.

This homebred is a late May foal and is the leading earner on the racetrack for his young sire Awesome Again, a Breeders' Cup Classic winner who finished among the top three leading first-crop sires in 2002 by virtue of throwing a pair of stakes winners (Toccet and Awesome Of Course - winner of the Inaugural Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs) in addition to the stakes-placed runner Echeverria. Awesome Again is by the top-class sire Deputy Minister, who has thrown the champions Open Mind, Go For Wand, Dehere, Diva's Debut, Hello Seattle, Eloquent Minister and the additional Grade I stakes winners Touch Gold, Deputy Commander, Keeper Hill and Salt Lake, among others. Toccets dam, Cozzene's Angel was minor stakes-placed at Monmouth and she is a half-sister to the stakes winners Courtly Candor and Miss Walkie Talkie. Cozzene's Angel is by the champion turf male Cozzene, whose best runners are generally considered grass routers, however he's a great source of stamina, be it on turf or dirt. As a broodmare sire, Cozzene is the sire 122 producing daughters and 16 stakes winners including the champion Chopinina, Megans Bluff, Karra Kul, Pivotal (GB), Wlizada, Lady Brook, Balboa Park and Big Score. Toccet has won four of five starts around two turns, including a nine-furlong score as a two-year-old in Aqueduct's Grade II Remsen. He's a colt that is bred top and bottom to stay a classic distance of ground; his bloodlines say he's still in the hunt at distance from a mile and an eighth to a mile and a quarter.
