Kentucky Derby 129 -- Quotes From Losing Trainers
ROBERT FRANKEL (Trainer, Empire Maker, 2nd; Peace Rules, 3rd) - "I still
think he (Empire Maker) is a better horse than that other horse (Funny
Cide). But that doesn't change what happened."
Is this the biggest disappointment of his career? "The biggest - no. Is
it a disappointment - certainly."
Thoughts on his horses for the other Triple Crown races? - "I think I'll
run Peace Rules in the Preakness. The other horse (Empire Maker) - no. I
don't know what I'll do with him next."
RON ELLIS (Trainer, Atswhatimtalkinbout, 4th) - "He ran a good race. He
got stuck down on the inside longer than we wanted and when we got clear
it was too late. He gave us a thrill for a little while anyways."
On the Preakness: "We'll talk about it. We'll see how he comes out of
the race. I think he ran good enough to take a look at it."
JERRY HOLLENDORFER (Trainer, Eye Of The Tiger, 5th) - "We were pleased
with his race. I'm never happy to run fifth, but he tried real hard for
us. I'm pleased with the ride he got, too. I may have given him (Eye Of
The Tiger) too much to do too soon. But he handled it well and he gave
his best. We thought the winner was very impressive."
Will he consider running in the Preakness? - "I would think so, but I've
got to talk to (owner) John Gunther about it. We'll also have to see how
he comes out of the race, of course. But we'll probably give it a look."
JEFF MULLINS (Trainer, Buddy Gil, 6th) - "We didn't get away from the
gate and get into the position that we wanted to be in. He doesn't like
to get too much dirt kicked in his face. I didn't really know what
happened from the 3/8th pole home. I kind of lost track of him for a
while, then saw him coming home up the fence."
BILL CURRIN (Trainer, Outta Here, 7th)- "I didn't really get to
see much of the race. All I could really see is my wife's big black hat
bobbing up and down. He came out of the race in good shape. He's got a
few little nicks and scratches but he's fine. We beat about half of them
and about half beat us, but overall I enjoyed the experience."
D. WAYNE LUKAS (Trainer, Ten Cents A Shine, 8th; Scrimshaw 11th) - "I
was happy with Scrimshaw's race. He ran well. He'll get a lot out of it.
I had to play a lot of catch up with him. There are two more legs in the
Triple Crown and I think we'll be there with him. The other horse (Ten
Cents A Shine) ran well. We'll get him straightened out by the end of
the summer."
WALLACE DOLLASE (Trainer, Ten Most Wanted, 9th) - "I don't understand
it. I can't believe it. I just don't know why he didn't run his race.
Pat (rider Pat Day) said he can't believe it either. He said he was in a
good spot with him and moving easy, and then there wasn't anything
there."
PATRICK GALLAGHER (Trainer, Domestic Dispute, 10th) - "He ran good.
(Jockey) Alex (Solis) said he wasn't handling the track and was bobbing
around. He was real happy with him considering he wasn't handling the
track. He really liked him. We'll consider keeping him on the dirt or
maybe the grass."
T.V. SMITH (Trainer, Offlee Wild, 12th) - "He's fine. There
doesn't seem to be any excuses. He came out in good shape. I was hoping
to be a little closer and get a little better break. In my opinion, the
worst place to be in a race is in the middle and that's where we were,
no fault of Robby (Albarado). I really think the missed time hurt us. He
will make his presence known to the racing world."
JIM BARNES (Assistant trainer, Indian Express, 14th) - "I saw disaster.
He missed the break. The rider said he threw his head at the break. He
had a lot of trouble going into the first turn."
TOM AMOSS (Trainer, Lone Star Sky, 15th) - "We obviously used bad
judgment in running him here. We'll look for a little better spot for
him next time."
PATRICK BIANCONE (Trainer, Brancusi, 16th) - "It's a Derby. We have
tried. We were not successful. We will come back next year. I'm happy -
except for the result."
