The Bob Baffert barn sent its two Kentucky Oaks (GI) fillies to the track Thursday (May 1) morning, one day before their dates in the 129th edition of the 3-year-old filly classic. Atlantic Ocean, who'll break from Post 8 in the Grade I headliner with David Flores up, went trackside at approximately 6:30 a.m. (EDT) for a mile and one-half gallop. Her stablemate Santa Catarina, who gets Gary Stevens as a rider and Post 11 as a starting point, galloped a similar distance shortly after Churchill Downs' mid-morning training break at approximately 8:30 a.m. (EDT). In both cases the fillies had exercise rider Mick Jenner in the boot. Normally they would be handled by stable regular Dana Barnes, but the wife of assistant trainer Jim Barnes had returned to the family home in California and was replaced by Jenner. Trainer Baffert noted that he might put his pair on the track for some exercise the day of the race. "It'll depend on the weather," the silver-haired conditioner said. Local forecasts call for rain and possible thunderstorms in the Louisville area Thursday (May 1) afternoon and evening with a possibility of a continuation through Friday (May 2) morning.

ATLANTIC OCEAN is a solid and accomplished filly who has looked and
trained
very well since arriving in Louisville. Rider David Flores has never
missed
a paycheck on her back and trainer Bob Baffert is another who is
synonomous
with Derby week success. Daughter of Stormy Atlantic will get stamina
from
her Seattle Slew mare and also from her good experience on the turf.
Unable
to beat this kind in previous attempts but she has taken a step forward
in
the mornings since arriving and may have a mental advantage over several
less seasoned rivals here. Like Baffert's other filly, she may be
conceding
something in the recency department to several others who figure to be
sharper as her last race was March 8 in New Orleans. However she is
probably
experienced enough to overcome that angle and has put in the quick works
to
sharpen back up. Sitting at 10-1 on the morning line and is likely to go
off
at higher odds - there is plenty to like here though others are more
enticing for the top spot. |

A $1.9 million Barrett's March two-year-old purchase, Atlantic Ocean is by the young Storm Cat sire Atlantic Ocean, whose stud fee is a modest $12,500, meager, in fact, when compared to the lofty sales price this filly fetched, which also says something about her physical appearance (and how fast she was able to drill an eighth of a mile at sale time). Stormy Atlantic was a modest stakes winner and is the sire of one crop to race at this writing with the stakes winners Jimmy O. and Hurricane Hebe also to his credit. Atlantic Ocean is the broodmare Super Chef's only stakes winner, though all threee of her foals have made it to the races and have won. Super Chef is by the fine broodmare sire, the late, great Seattle Slew, and is out of the Grade III stakes winner Super Cook. As a broodmare sire, 1974's Horse of the Year and three-time champion Seattle Slew has been as prolific as he was a racehorse and a sire, as he is the sire of 316 producing daughters and 108 black-type winners including two-time Horse of the Year and three-time champion Cigar and the additional champions Seeking The Pearl, Lemon Drop Kid, Hishi Akebono, Escena, Golden Attraction and Mulca, as well as the millionaires Agnes World ($3 million plus in lifetime earnings), Astra and Raging Fever. Atlantic Ocean is a two-turn stakes winner on both turf and dirt and is a grandson of Storm Cat out of a Seattle Slew mare - she'll have no problems staying a mile and an eighth.
