Island Fashion, winner of the WinStar/Sunland Oaks jogged on May 1 at Churchill Downs. Afterward, trainer Nick Canani talked about how the Oaks is shaping up on paper. "It looks like a race that when the gate opens, the riders are going to make their own decisions. There will be 12 different fillies and 12 different ideas. (Our) being in the 12-hole, there's not much you can do. They'll just try to get inside." Canani said Island Fashion is very responsive to moves like that. "She's a really smart filly," he said.

ISLAND FASHION was only a maiden when she won the WinStar Oaks last out
and
did so in style after racing wide throughout. Didn't beat much that day
but
it was an ideal prep for a lightly-raced filly who is a physically
imposing
specimen. Unlike most big fillies she is light on her feet and has given
the
appearance of a very pretty mover going over this track in the mornings.
Trainer Nick Canani is the son of noted California conditioner Julio
Canani,
who has conditioned several top turf milers including Silic and Ladies
Din
among others. Final workout in preparation for Oaks 129 was sizzling
with
the clockers catching her in : 46/25 and she did it with ease. Top West
Coast rider Pat Valenzuela should get her a nice stalking trip while
avoiding the dueling leaders and he is sitting on a good thing here
despite
her relative lack of experience and 30-1 odds. Longshot will run well
and
could get the IRS interested in your exotic wagers. Use her liberally on
all
your tickets. |

The lightly-raced homebred gray or roan filly Island Fashion is by Grade II Ohio Derby winner Petionville, a sire of four crops and eight stakes winners inlcuding Island Fashion; Grade III Philadelphia Breeders' Cup Handicap winner True Passion and Grade II Arlington-Washington Futurity (GII) winner Publication. This miss is out of the listed stakes-winner Danzigs Fashion, winner of the Likely Exchange Stakes at Turfway Park. Island Fashion's tail female line traces back to the listed stakes winner Fleet Road, the restricted stakes winner Tuzia and the multiple listed stakes winner Tanja in her third dam. As a broodmare sire, A Native Danzig (by Danzig) is the sire of 18 producing daughters including the stakes winenrs Azireprice, Island Fashion, Prairie Swinger, Taxas Rose and Deputy Bunk. Island Fashion is by a graded stakes winner at nine furlongs out of a dam who is by the top-class stallion Danzig. Additionally, her female family peppered with two-turn stakes winners, so the mile and an eighth distance of the Kentucky Oaks (GI) ought to be within this filly's reach.
