Oasis Stable's Ruby's Reception, winner of last week's Fantasy (GII) at Oaklawn Park, has very strong Kentucky connections - but her trainer said Tuesday (Apr. 15) that the daughter of Rubiano is "unlikely" to run in the Kentucky Oaks (GI).
The filly, who is owned by a partnership that includes four Henderson, Ky. businessmen, arrived at Iowa's Prairie Meadows on Tuesday with the rest of Ellis Park-based trainer Larry Jones' stable. Jones said the timing of the May 2 Oaks is not good for his filly and Ruby's Reception would likely be in her stall at the Iowa track on Oaks Day.
"I'm not saying we couldn't dive down in there, but right now that's not the plan," Jones said. "I really don't know what we're going to do, to tell you the truth. But she doesn't really like to get her races real close together and we're probably going to try to space her out a little more than the Oaks."
If Ruby's Reception does not appear at Churchill Downs on Oaks Day, Jones said it would not be because the race is not important to him or to the filly's owners.
"I'm a Kentucky boy and to win a race like that is always my ambition," he said. "I'm not saying that this filly is fragile, but she's small and you just can't go to the well too many times real quick. It looks like she does her best running when she's got at least four weeks between races and up to five."
Ruby's Reception has a career record of 4-3-1 in nine races and her only poor effort came in a 10th-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) at Arlington Park. She injured an ankle in that outing and Jones gave her plenty of time to recover. She made her first start of the year in a runner-up finish in Oaklawn's Honeybee on March 8 and followed with her Fantasy win on April 11.
Jones said he will be looking for options for his filly and could look for a run on the grass for Ruby's Reception, who is out of the A.P. Indy mare Court Reception.
"At least now we know she's back and it looks like we'll have some good racing with her this year," he said. "I've always said that I wanted one that was good enough to dodge the 'heavy heads' with and it looks like we may have one of them now."

The gray/roan filly Ruby's Reception is by the champion sprinter Rubiano (by Fappiano), a sire of eight crops and 21 stakes winners including Burning Roma, Starry Dreamer, Grey Velvet, Davey's Cutlass and Chris's Thunder. She is out of an unraced mare by A.P. Indy and the stakes winning Sovereign Dancer mare Court Hostess, winner of the Grade III Brown & Williamson Handicap (GIII) at Churchill Downs. Ruby's Reception hails from a black-type laden distaff family, as her tail female line traces back to Grade II Louisville Breeders' Cup winner Connie's Gift and the stakes winner Gold Token in her second dam and to Grade I Oak Leaf Stakes winner Folk Art, the multiple stakes winner Sportin' Life, Group I Prix Jean Prat winner Local Talent, Group I 2000 Guineas victor Mark Of Esteem (Ire) and Grade III Tempted Stakes winner Chimichurri in her third dam. Even though Rubiano is a sire best known for getting sprinters who are at their best up to a mile, Ruby's Reception's pedigree is an example of a speed-on-stamina nick, or cross. She's inbred to 1964 Kentucky Derby (GI) winner Northern Dancer and to the legendary Bold Ruler, winner of Flamingo Stakes, Wood Memorial, Preakness Stakes, Jerome Handicap, Vosburgh Handicap and Queens County Handicap, among other stakes, as a 3-year-old in 1957. Ruby's Reception has proven on the racetrack that a mile and a sixteenth is within her grasp, and her route-oriented distaff family should help her stay the mile and and eighth distance of the Kentucky Oaks (GI).
