The Bob Baffert barn sent its two Kentucky Oaks (GI) fillies to the track Thursday (May 1) morning, one day before their dates in the 129th edition of the 3-year-old filly classic. Atlantic Ocean, who'll break from Post 8 in the Grade I headliner with David Flores up, went trackside at approximately 6:30 a.m. (EDT) for a mile and one-half gallop. Her stablemate Santa Catarina, who gets Gary Stevens as a rider and Post 11 as a starting point, galloped a similar distance shortly after Churchill Downs' mid-morning training break at approximately 8:30 a.m. (EDT). In both cases the fillies had exercise rider Mick Jenner in the boot. Normally they would be handled by stable regular Dana Barnes, but the wife of assistant trainer Jim Barnes had returned to the family home in California and was replaced by Jenner. Trainer Baffert noted that he might put his pair on the track for some exercise the day of the race. "It'll depend on the weather," the silver-haired conditioner said. Local forecasts call for rain and possible thunderstorms in the Louisville area Thursday (May 1) afternoon and evening with a possibility of a continuation through Friday (May 2) morning.

SANTA CATARINA is talented and lightly-raced. Comes into this race very
fresh after taking time between her last two starts. Encouraged that she
finished third in the Breeders' Cup juvenile fillies behind two you will
not
see here and trainer Bob Baffert should be able to overcome the layoff
with
a series of sharp works at Santa Anita and then Churchill Downs.
Daughter of
Unbridled out of a Storm Cat mare has impeccable breeding and certainly
figures to stay the nine panels with ease off that mating cross. Didn't
beat
much in her blowout allowance win at Santa Anita and you must wonder
what
happened that day for her to skip several chances at a final prep and
come
to the race fresh when so many others are sharp from racing. Rider Gary
Stevens is a good one and has won more than his share Derby weekend.
Actually prefer the other Baffert filly but this one has a bright future
when the small nagging problems that have kept her away are behind her. |

The bay filly Santa Catarina is by Unbridled, a champion and earner of nearly $4.5 million on the racetrack and the sire of 9 crops and 32 stakes winners including champions Banshee Breeze and Anees, as well as millionaires Red Chili Pepper, Lady Ballade (Ire), Unshaded and Unbridled's Song. Her dam, Purrfectly, is a daughter of sire of sires Storm Cat, who is a half-sister to the top-class Group 1 winning filly Culture Vulture. In fact, Santa Catarina hails from an exceptional distaff family laden with black type, which may explain her hefty $950,000 price tag as a yearling at the 2001 Keeneland September yearling sale. Her tail female line traces back to the likes of English champion Zilzal, Grade I Flamingo Stakes winner Awe Inspiring, the multiple graded stakes winner Recognizable and Polish Precendent, a champion miler in France. As a broodmare sire, sire of sires Storm Cat is the sire of 193 producing daughters and 27 stakes winners including two-time champion Phalaenopsis (Jpn); millionaires Grass World and Black Tuxedo (Jpn) and the stakes winners Max's Pal, Baptize, Berg Ticket (Jpn), Buddha, Sunday Break (Jpn) and Penny's Gold. This filly was cut out to be a dirt router; she won't have a problem staying a mile and an eighth on Oaks Day.
