Yell Makes Herself Heard With Dominant Display In Davona Dale
By: John Gaver III

(Feb. 23, 2003) - Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider's Yell rated kindly off pacesetting Ivanavinalot, swept to the lead just inside the three-sixteenths pole under jockey John Velazquez and drew off to win the $150,000 Davona Dale Stakes (GII) on Feb. 23 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. by six lengths.

Ivanavinalot, who set fractions of :23.13, :47.28 and 1:12.08 held on for second, 5 ¾-lengths to the good of Gold Player, the longest shot in the compact field of five 3-year-old fillies.

Perfect Story and favored My Boston Gal, who was sent postward at odds of 9-5, rounded out the official order of finish. Smokey Blue was a late scratch.

A dark bay or brown daughter of A.P. Indy and Wild Applause, Yell covered a mile and a sixteenth over a "good" surface in 1:44.96 and returned $12.40, $4.40 and $2.40. She improved her career record to three wins and a third from four lifetime starts. The $90,000 winner's share of the Davona Dale purse elevated her career earnings to $142,950.

Bird Town Sings In Charon -- Maylou Whitney's Bird Town stalked free-running No Love Song for a half-mile, swept to the lead on the far turn and drew off in the stretch to win the $52,100 Charon Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by an impressive 12 ½-lengths over Crafty Brat. The seven-furlong overnight handicap was also contested at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 23.

9-5 favorite Westerly Breeze finished third, 13 ¾-lengths behind Bird Song. Kitty Knight, No Love Song and Rehocracy completed the official order of finish. Chimichurri and Smokey Blue were late scratches.

Bird Song, a bay filly by Cape Town out of the Storm Bird mare Dear Birdie, covered seven furlongs over a "good" strip in 1:22.90 and earned $31,260.
