Wagering And Attendance For 2003 Kentucky Oaks Rank Among Highest Ever
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 2, 2003) - Churchill Downs enjoyed a successful
129th renewal of the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, May 2 as wagering and
attendance figures for the day ranked among the event's all-time best.
A crowd of 100,523 - the fifth largest crowd in the history of the race
- passed through the turnstiles at the historic track on the day before
the Kentucky Derby. It marked the fifth consecutive year that
attendance for the 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-old fillies had topped the
100,000 mark.
The record for Kentucky Oaks attendance was established in 2000, when
106,156 witnessed the race. Attendance for the 2002 Oaks totaled
101,932.
On-track wagering on the 11-race Kentucky Oaks card totaled
$11,251,063, an increase of 2.9 percent from 2002. Total wagering on the
day's races soared to $30,895,718, up 8.16% from last year's total of
$28,565,391.
