Explosive Beauty Rolls Again
Southeast -- The
3-year-old filly stars of trainer Carl Nafzger's stable, unbeaten Golden
Rod (GII) winner My Boston Gal and Walmac Alcibiades (GII) winner
Westerly Breeze, make their season debuts Sunday at Gulfstream.
My Boston Gal heads a strong field of six in the $150,000 Davona
Dale (Grade II) at 1 1/16-miles. Regular jockey Calvin Borel will be in
the saddle as the daughter of Boston Harbor faces Perfect Story, a
half-sister to 2001 "Horse of the Year" Point Given; Florida Stallion
Stakes filly champion Ivanavinalot; and Yell, a Shug McGaughey-trained
daughter of A.P. Indy who will be making her stakes debut.
Westerly Breeze heads a field of eight in the $50,000 Charon
Stakes at seven furlongs, the Gone West filly's first race since a
sixth-place finish behind Storm Flag Flying in the Breeders' Cup
Juvenile Fillies (GI) at Arlington Park. Her rivals include Tempted
(GIII) winner Chimichurri and unbeaten Kitty Knight, winner of the
Heavenly Cause at Laurel Park.
Storm Flag Flying, the unbeaten 2-year-old filly champion of
2002, breezed an easy four furlongs in :50.40 Thursday at Gulfstream
Park. She is expected to make her 2003 debut for trainer Shug McGaughey
in the Forward Gal (GIII) on March 14.
"She's doing good," he said. "If she continues to do the way
she is, then the Forward Gal will be her first start back."
Dubai -- Godolphin Racing lists
the Kentucky Oaks (GI) as one of its major American racing objectives
and the Dubai-based racing powerhouse may have a major Oaks contender in
Danuta.
The daughter of the late 1989 Kentucky Derby winner Sunday
Silence rolled to an easy 7 3/4-length victory over stablemate Ashraaf
in the Moonshell Mile at Nad Al Sheba on Thursday. Danuta covered the
one-mile distance in 1:37.46.
Central -- Explosive Beauty affirmed her
status as the 3-year-old filly star of Oaklawn Park on Monday as the
Cole Norman-trained filly rolled to a 5 3/4-length romp in the Martha
Washington Stakes.
The homebred owned by Drs. K.K. and Devi Jayaraman, who won the
Dixie Belle Stakes at the Hot Springs, Ark. track, easily defeated
Hannah's Royalrock and covered six furlongs in 1:11.38.
Trainer Bob Baffert said The Thoroughbred Corp's Atlantic Ocean
would travel to New Orleans to make her next start in the March 8 Fair
Grounds Oaks (GII). The $1.9 million sales purchase has won three
consecutive starts, all in stakes races.
East -- Aqueduct's $100,000 Cicada Stakes
(GIII) on March 22 has been scheduled as the next start for Charlotte C.
Polin's Ladyecho, winner of last week's Dearly Precious Stakes at the
New York track.
The seven-furlong Cicada is attractive to trainer John Servis
because Ladyecho is 4-for-5 at one-turn distances.
West -- Robert and Beverly Lewis'
Santa Catarina turned in a sharp six-furlong work on Wednesday as she
continued her impressive preparation for her 3-year-old debut.
The Bob Baffert-trained daughter of 1990 Kentucky Derby winner
Unbridled blazed the distance in 1:11.80, the fastest move of the day at
the distance. She finished third to champion Storm Flag Flying in the
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI).
