Surgery Knocks "Belle" Out Of Oaks
By: John Asher

Kentucky Oaks 129 Headlines:

  • Cyber Secret Pulls Cicada Surprise
  • Buffythecenterfold Flashy In Return Win

Central -- Silverbulletday (GIII) winner Belle of Perintown will be out of action until early May after undergoing surgery to remove a bone chip from her ankle.

Trainer Eddie Kenneally told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that the Dehere filly, who won the Pocahontas Stakes last fall at Churchill Downs, injured the ankle in a third place finish to the unbeaten Lady Tak in the recent Fair Grounds Oaks (GII) at the Fair Grounds.

"She should come back 100 percent," said Kenneally.

Ken and Sarah Ramsey's Adopted Daughter ($13) won Saturday's $150,000-added Bourbonette Breeders' Cup at Turfway Park when favored Golden Marlin, who had finished a length in front, was disqualified by track stewards for interference in the stretch.

Adopted Daughter, ridden by Dean Butler, and Golden Marlin, with Jason Lumpkins up, dueled through much of the one-mile Bourbonette. The latter edged away after the 3-year-old fillies bumped in the stretch and finished the mile in 1:37.41. But the order of finish was reversed after stewards scrutinized the videotapes of the race.

Trainer Greg Foley admitted that his horse "lugged in a couple of strides," but was very unhappy with the decision.

"I've seen worse with nothing brought down and that horse wasn't going to ever go by. That was a $150,000 race and the best horse won."

Adopted Daughter won for the third time in four races for trainer Ronny Werner, who said the filly sould run next in the Beaumont Stakes (GIII) at Keeneland.

East -- Sanford Goldfarb and Team Julep Stable's Cyber Secret rallied from just off the pace and pulled away to an easy 4 1/2-length victory over odds-on favorite Roar Emotion in Saturday's $100,000 Cicada (GIII) at Aqueduct.

Jockey Shaun Bridgmohan rode the Richard Dutrow, Jr.-trained filly as she won for the fourth time in seven races.

"I asked her at the top of the stretch and she really took off," Bridgmohan said. "She ran really big."

Trainer Carlos Martin was not unhappy with the loss in the seven-furlong Cicada by Roar Emotion, who was running for the first time since her victory in the Demoiselle (GII) at Aqueduct in late November.

"There will be some people who are disappointed, but I'm not," said Martin. "She's just getting back into action."

Maryland invader Boxer Girl finished third.

West -- Brian Allen and Stronach Stable's Buffythecenterfold fought back in the stretch after losing the lead to the favored Watching You to win Sunday's $75,000 Santa Paula Stakes at Santa Anita.

A two-time stakes winner at two, the daughter of Capote had not competed since a seventh-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) at Arlington Park. Buffythecenterfold covered 6 1/2-furlongs in 1:16.56 as she won for the fourth time in seven races for trainer Mel Stute, a finalist for enshrinement this year in Thoroughbred racing's Hall of Fame.

"I'm pleased with the way she dug in and came back," said Stute. "She's really grown up a lot and matured, so I am looking forward to a good year with her."
