Apr. 22, 2003
By: John Asher & Gary Yunt

Kentucky Oaks 129 Headlines:

  • Go For Glamour Works Half-Mile
  • Island Fashion Drills Six Furlongs
  • My Boston Gal Put In Maintenance Move

ATLANTIC OCEAN/SANTA CATARINA - The Thoroughbred Corporation's Atlantic Ocean walked the shedrow at Barn 33 a day after working seven furlongs in 1:24 1/5 for trainer Bob Baffert. David Flores, who has ridden Atlantic Ocean in three of her stakes victories, has the call for the Oaks. Bob and Beverly Lewis' Santa Catarina schooled at the starting gate and then jogged a mile under exercise rider Dana Barnes. Gary Stevens has the call for the Oaks.

GO FOR GLAMOUR - Columbine Stable's Go For Glamour worked a half-mile in :50.60 after the renovation break with exercise rider Andy Durnin up. "She worked beautiful," trainer Beau Greely said. "I don't need to do a lot with her. She has just run in the (Santa Anita) Oaks and Fantasy, so she is pretty tight. She carries weight, but she is not a big filly. I am just really getting maintenance works in her right now. "I got her in 50 flat. I told Andy to go anywhere from 49 to 51, to just really stretch her legs. That's all she needs. She did it well and Andy said he had her in hand. If he had let her go, she would have gotten away from him. I will probably go an easy eighths or a half next week." Alex Solis has the call in the Oaks. Greely also sent out Woodford Reserve Turf hopeful Century City out for a :51.40 work on the grass. Jose Valdivia Jr. has the call in the Woodford Reserve.

IN CASE OF WIND - Karen and James Stone's In Case Of Wind galloped a mile and a half at the Trackside Training Center under exercise rider Mark Fuchs. Trainer Bill Million plans to work In Case Of Wind five-eighths at Trackside under Oaks rider Calvin Borel Friday morning at 7:30.

ISLAND FASHION - With owners Jeff and Sue Nielsen of Everest Stables looking on, Island Fashion worked six furlongs in 1:12.40 in company under jockey Sal Gonzalez after the renovation break. "She breezed very, very well," trainer Nick Canani said. "She broke about three or four lengths behind a horse of Elliott Walden, who gave me a hand. She worked really well. It was a very nice work. She will come back in six days and work a half." Pat Valenzuela has the call for the Oaks.

LADY TAK - Fair Grounds Oaks winner Lady Tak walked the shedrow a day after working six furlongs in 1:13.20. Assistant trainer Scott Blasi said Lady Tak came out of her work fine and would return to the track in the morning.

MY BOSTON GAL - Chester Porter, Phil Milner and Randall Bloch's My Boston Gal, the Carl Nafzger-trained winner of the Golden Rod (GII) and Stonerside Beaumont (GII), breezed five furlongs in 1:01.40 over a "fast" track under exercise rider Tracey Wilkes. Assistant trainer Ian Wilkes said he was looking for nothing special out of the move by the daughter of Boston Harbor. "She worked good," said Ian Wilkes. "I was just looking for a maintenance work. We just wanted something to just let her stretch her legs and keep her moving forward. She didn't need a lot today and I got exactly what I wanted." Wilkes said My Boston Gal remains on target for the May 2 Kentucky Oaks. "She couldn't be any better," he said. Pat Day will ride My Boston Gal in the Kentucky Oaks.

MY TRUSTY CAT - Honeybee winner My Trusty Cat galloped early Tuesday morning under exercise rider Jeff Cuddie. Trainer David Vance plans to work the Tale of the Cat filly on Sunday.
