ACTION THIS DAY has fallen out of favor a bit after a three race losing streak that followed his impressive Breeders' Cup Juvenile win at Santa Anita last year. Trainer Dick Mandella has been patient with him and has indicated this week that the horse's back may have been bothering him throughout the three race campaign this year. His speed figures really aren't fast enough and that leaves his supporters hoping that Mandella is right - that the injury is to blame. As a son of Kris S. he does have the breeding to get the distance and the running style to pick up the pieces when many who can't stay it start backing up. Fifth or better would be quite a coup for one who hasn't lived up to expectations thus far. |

Action This Day is by Kris S., who had three wins, one in a minor stake, in his short five-race career. Kris S., who passed away in May 2002, has had a much greater impact through the breeding shed than he did on the race track. His offspring include four Breeders’ Cup Champions: Prized (1989 Turf), Hollywood Wildcat (1993 Distaff), Brocco (1993 Juvenile), and Action This Day (2003 Juvenile). He has also sired Belmont Stakes (GI) winner Kissin Kris, two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Symboli Kris S, Oaklawn Handicap (GI) winner Kudos, and another leading three-year-old in Tiger Hunt. Action This Day is the second foal of racing age out of Najecam, who was grade two stakes-placed, while finishing with a 6-5-6 record from 33 starts. Four of her six wins came in two-turn dirt races, and with Kris S.’ ability to get horses that can perform well over a route of ground, Action This Day is well-suited to be able to get the Derby distance.
