CASTLEDALE is hard to figure but not without a chance in the Derby. He proved trainer Jeff Mullins right when able to capture the Santa Anita Derby as the longest shot on the board. The trainer had been telling owners Greg Knee and Frank Lyons that their charge actually trained better on the dirt but all his experience had come on the turf in Ireland and subsequently at Hollywood Park, where he won the Generous last year. There's been no looking back since his impressive win, where he was able to put his head down and win despite a lot of lane changing and bumping late in the race. That's a credit to his toughness and it's hard to think he won't improve with a clean trip in the third start of his form cycle. Figures to come from pretty far back and that means jockey Jose Valdivia will need some luck to get clean run in the lane. Shouldn't be overbet and he's a huge threat if able to improve on his impressive Grade 1 win last out. Peintre Celebre, sire of Castledale, was the International classification highweight and European champion in 1997 at age three . That year he won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (GI), the Prix du Jockey-Club (GI), the Grand Prix de Paris (GI), and the Prix Greffulhe (GII); all in France. His five length win in the Arc, defeating Pilsudski, Borgia, Helissio, and Swain, was one of the most impressive in recent memory He is the sire of three graded stakes winners from his first crop in 2003. Besides Castledale, his other 2004 stakes winner is Pearl of Love, who won the Gran Criterium (GI) in France. Castledale is out of the Silver Hawk mre Louju. Castledale is Louju's third foal; the other two having one win between them. Louju was unraced; she sold at Keeneland as a weanling for $77,000. She ia half sister to two minor stakes performers. Louju's dam, Secretarial Queen, ran second in the Hollywood Oaks (GI). She is also one of four stakes winners from her dam Nicoma. Dosage Index: 1.88
