Coming Derby Week! Fire Slam is from the second crop of Grand Slam, who was the second highest rated two-year-old in North America in 1997. That year, he won both the Futurity (GI) and the Moet Champagne Stakes (GI) at Belmont, as well as tying the track record for five and one-half furlongs when he broke his maiden over the same oval. The next year, he won the 1 1/8 miles Peter Pan (GII), as well as finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (GI) at Churchill Downs. He retired to Ashford Stud with a record of 4-5-2 from 15 starts. He is the sire of 2003 Breeders' Cup Sprint (GI) winner Cajun Beat and 2003 stakes winning two-year-olds Limehouse and Sweet Jo Jo. While this data may suggest a trend towards getting precocious and sprinting offspring, there is evidence to the opposite. He also sired Grand Hombre, winner of the Pennsylvania Derby (GIII) and second in the Indiana Derby (GIII); and Strong Hope, who won the Jim Dandy (GII) and finished third in the Travers (GI). Fire Slam is the second foal, and the first to race, out of his dam Miss Firefly. She was a sprint special on the Kentucky racing circuit, earning $117,479 in 13 lifetime starts. All of her five wins came at seven furlongs or less. She is also a half-sister to Ragged Kingdom (Lord At War), a stakes winner of over $202,000 and very versatile horse who won on turf and in sprints and routes on the dirt.
