FRIENDS LAKE will attempt to defy the historical Derby winner's profile by winning the race off a seven week layoff and that's quite a tall order. The good news is that trainer John Kimmel is known to be great off a layoff and he has prepared his horse for the Derby on the deep and taxing Payson Park surface, which should have him fit enough. The son of A.P. Indy out of the talented mare Antespend was bred by owners Chester and Mary Broman, who seek to follow in the footsteps of Sackatoga Stable last year with another New York bred Derby winner. Running style is a plus as he figures to get a relaxed trip without falling completely out of it early. Probably worth a stab if the layoff isn't a concern to you. Friends Lake is one of the most impeccably bred New York horses of all time. The breeders, Chester and Mary Broman, own Friends Lake's dam Antespend. They shipped her to Kentucky to breed to his sire, A. P. Indy, then returned her to New York to foal the chestnut colt. is by Horse of the Year and champion A.P. Indy, a son of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew and the leading sire in North America in 2003. He sired last year's Horse of the Year Mineshaft, as well as champion Tempura, Grade I winner Golden Missile; millionaire Symboli Indy; Grade I winner Aptitude and Grade II winner Lu Ravi. He also has leading 2004 Derby contender Gradepoint. A 2000 Racing Hall of Fame inductee, A.P. Indy won eight of eleven starts, including the 1992 Belmont (GI) and Breeders' Cup Classic(GI) while on his way to that year's championship honors. He was the morning line favorite for the Kentucky Derby, but was scratched the morning of the race due to a hoof injury. He raced in Will Farish's Lane's End Farm colors, where he also currently stands stud. A.P. Indy also has a very prominent female family. His dam, Weekend Surprise, was a multiple graded stakes winner and produced nine winners as a broodmare, including Summer Squall, winner of the Preakness (GI), Welcome Surprise, winner of the Dogwood (GIII), and stakes placed horses Honor Grades and Weekend In Seattle. Friends Lake is the third foal, all winners, out of Antespend, a multiple graded stakes winner of over $1 million in her career. Her victories included the Del Mar Invitational Oaks (G1), the Santa Anita Oaks (G1), and the Las Virgenes Stakes (G1). Overall, she won 10 of 24 starts. She began her racing career under trainer Daniel Smithwick in Kentucky, but then-owner Jack Kent Cooke sent her to trainer Ron McAnally. She is a daughter of 1985 Derby winner Spend A Buck, giving Friends Lake two Derby winners in his first two generations. Dosage Index: 3.00
