IMPERIALISM is a model of consistency in a year where that trait is in short supply. The late-running son of Langfuhr has run well in all three preps this year, winning the San Vicente and the San Rafael before running third in the Santa Anita Derby. He was involved in pretty serious trouble late in the SA Derby and probably took the worst of it. Add to that the fact that he was racing inside that day and can't see too well out of his sunken right eye and he has a lot of excuses for a race where he was still a close third. Trainer Kristen Mulhall is getting a lot of attention as a young woman with a Derby starter but she has built a powerhouse stable in Southern California and is already training more horses than most people twice her age. Speed figures put him close to the top tier and he's trained like he can handle the track fine. Plenty to like here and the price will be fair. Imperialism is by Langfuhr, the Canadian champion sprinter in 1996. While he only won two allowance races in that country during the campaign, he did take both the Vosburgh (G1) and the Forego (G2) the same year. He followed those victories with Grade One wins the next year in the Metropolitan and Carter Handicaps (both as the highweight). He has sired 14 stakes winners to date, including Canadian Triple Crown Winner and Horse of the Year Wando, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (GI) runner up Imperial Gesture, and millionaire and multiple graded stakes winner Mobil. He was the leading third crop sire in North America in 2003. Imperialism is out of the gray mare Bodhavista, who was purchased by Michael Sherman's Farnsworth Farm for $4,500 in 1993 at the Keeneland November mixed sale. Her first foal was White Beauty, who won five stakes, all on the turf, at ages three, four, and five. Overall, she has had six foals to race, with four of those being winners. Her dam, Fia, was bred in Indiana. From modest beginnings, Fia went on to race three years, with six wins from 25 lifetime starts, earning $130,094. She also finished third in the 1 1/2 miles Coaching Club American Oaks (GI) at Belmont Park and the Diana Handicap (GIIT) at Saratoga, suggesting a solid distance influence in Imperialism's tail-female line. Fia is also the dam of Paulrus, who finished third in the Tropical Park Derby (GIIIT), a race in which Imperialism was placed fifth.
