LIMEHOUSE will break inside in Kentucky Derby 130 under Jose Santos and he'll probably be one of the longer shots on the board starting from a 30-1 morning line. The son of Grand Slam had a nice two stakes race winning streak snapped when he was third in the Blue Grass Stakes last out and he appeared to be too close to the early pace at Keeneland that day because the late kick was not there in the stretch drive. Rider Santos won the race last year and should know him better in their second pairing, and his mount returns to a track surface where he has already won two stakes. But those races were much shorter and the Derby distance is certainly going to test a son of Grand Slam out of a Dixieland Band mare, who may not be able to lay off the pace as much as he would like. This is an honest colt with a good future but it's hard to see him cracking the top echelon. Limehouse is from the second crop of Grand Slam, who was the second highest rated two-year-old in North America in 1997. That year, he won both the Futurity (GI) and the Moet Champagne Stakes (GI) at Belmont, as well as tying the track record for five and one-half furlongs when he broke his maiden over the same oval. The next year, he won the 1 1/8 miles Peter Pan (GII), as well as finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (GI) at Churchill Downs. He retired to Ashford Stud with a record of 4-5-2 from 15 starts. He is the sire of 2003 Breeders' Cup Sprint (GI) winner Cajun Beat and 2003 stakes winning two-year-old Sweet Jo Jo and Derby contender Fire Slam. Limehouse is out of Dixieland Blues, a Dixieland Band mare who raced only once, finishing second. She has three named foals, with one other to race besides Limehouse; a filly who is winless in four starts. She also has a yearling filly that is a full sister to Limehouse. Dixieland Blues is a half sister to Denim Yenem, a California bred filly who won or placed in several stakes at age two and three in her home state. Limehouse's second dam, Blue Jean Baby, was primarily a sprinter who won the Grade Two Sorority Stakes at age two. With the sprinting influence prominent in his tail-female line, it is key that Limehouse has Dixieland Band as his broodmare sire. On the racetrack, he was a winner at nine furlongs in the Pennsylvania Derby (GIII) and the Massachusetts Handicap (GII). In the breeding shed, he is the sire of champions in England, Ireland, Italy, and Canada; he ranks as the leading son of Native Dancer in the last five years. He is also the broodmare sire of over 50 stakes winners, including 2000 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos. Dosage Index: 3.89
