LION HEART is the play in Kentucky Derby 130. He comes to the race with impressive but still improving form after a pair of good seconds in key prep races. His speed ratings are high and he's benefitted from the experience trainer Patrick Biancone gained saddling Brancusi last year. Like Brancusi, he's stayed at Keeneland to prepare for the Derby away from the hype but he did van in for a sizzling final workout that got him acquainted with the local dirt. Brought $1.4 million as a yearling and that sale came at a time when his sire, Tale Of The Cat, was just starting to build a reputation with his young horses, which means this guy was a looker to bring that kind of money at the sales. Backed up his good looks with three wins as a juvenile and he's never been worse than second in five career starts. Should be all set for another big race in the Derby and he'll provide good value at projected odds between 10 and 20 to 1. Use him on every ticket. |

Lion Heart is by Tale of the Cat, who, after being unraced at age two, compiled a 5-1-2 record from nine lifetime starts in his three- and four-year-old campaigns. His lone stakes win came in the seven furlong King's Bishop (GII). In addition, he finished second in the 1 1/8 miles Whitney Handicap (GI) and third in both of his tries in the seven furlong Vosburgh (GI). He is a son of Storm Cat, sire of over 110 stakes winners. He is also a half brother to Myth, the dam of undefeated champion two-year-old Johannesburg, and Minardi, champion two-year-old in Europe. Besides the subject horse, Tale of the Cat has sired 2003 two year old stakes winners Whoopi Cat (Adirondack Stakes (GII)), Be Gentle (Alcibiades Stakes (GII)), and Feline Story (Sorority Stakes (GIII)). Lion Heart is out of Satin Sunrise, an extremely durable race mare who started a remarkable 78 times. Her stamina was almost certainly due to her sire, Mr. Leader, who sired 25 crops of racing age before his death in 1999. As a broodmare sire, Mr. Leader produced the dams of 62 stakes winner to date, including the champion filly Epitome. Satin Sunrise finished with a 23-12-17 record, with 16 of those wins coming in two turn dirt races. She won her only stake at age five, taking the restricted My Fair Lady Stakes. Other than Lion Heart, Satin Sunrise is the dam of one other foal to race; French Satin, who won the Florida Oaks (GIII) and ran third in Davona Dale (GII).
