MASTER DAVID won the Sham Stakes and then took a short break before shipping to New York for the Wood Memorial, where he ran a good second to Tapit in a race that probably helped his fitness. So trainer Bobby Frankel has him set to peak on Derby Day and as good a trainer as he is, he probably learned a lot about handling Derby horses from Empire Maker and Peace Rules last year. This year he has but one contender to focus on and the limelight has shone a little brighter on others Derby week, taking most of the pressure off Frankel and his son of Grand Slam. The chestnut colt should get stamina from his Sadler's Wells mare and has trained like he can handle the local track no problem. Remains a little weak by the numbers but Frankel is such a smart horseman that you have to think his charge is sitting on the race of his life. Best idea is not to let him beat you. |

Master David is a son of Grand Slam, the second-best rated two-year-old colt with an Experimental Free Handicap rating of 123. He won the Champagne (GI) and Futurity Stakes (GI) at Belmont.
At age three, he returned from serious hock injury to win the Peter Pan (GII) and finished second in the Breeders Cup Sprint (GI). Overall, he won races at distances 5 1/2 furlongs, when he equaled a track record at Belmont, to nine furlongs in the Peter Pan. He finished his career with a 4-5-2 mark from 15 starts. He was the champion sophmore sire in 2003, with 19 stakes horses in the crop, including Breeders' Cup Sprint (GI) winner Cajun Beat, Jim Dandy (GII) victor Strong Hope, Pennsylvania Derby (GIII) winner Grand Hombre, and Deputy Minister (GIII) champ Alke. In 2004, he has had seven stakes winners as of February 23, including leading three-year-olds Limehouse, who won the Hutcheson (GII) and Fire Slam, winner of the LeComte (GIII). Master David's dam, Nadra, is an Irish bred mare who has had six foals, all who have raced, with four winners to date, including Master David. While she was winless in seven starts, Nadra comes from a very strong European racing family. Her half-brother Revere (IRE), was a graded stakes winner in Italy and England. Her dam Bint Pasha, who won the Prix Vermeille [G1] and Yorkshire Oaks [G1], was the highweight filly at age three on the French Free Handicap for 1 3/8 to 1 3/4 miles and is the dam of seven winners.
