MINISTER ERIC is not a horse you hear a lot about coming up to the Derby, but he's very dangerous. Trainer Dick Mandella and jockey Pat Day make a potent team and their charge got a huge confidence boost out of his resounding allowance win at Keeneland last out. There has been some criticism of Mandella's decision to go in the allowance race as a final prep but his colt needed confidence more than graded earnings and he may have figured out how to win that day after a series of good races that resulted in seconds and thirds. The son of Old Trieste will need more stamina than his father had, as that one set blazing fractions in the Derby and then completely caved in down the lane. A very tough read here but it's hard to knock anyone who wants to take a shot on Day and Mandella with a colt who just may be sitting on his best race to date. Minister Eric is by Old Trieste, a very fast horse who finished tenth in the 1998 Kentucky Derby after setting the pace for the first mile. Like Minister Eric, Old Trieste came into the Derby off an allowance race victory. Old Trieste, who passed away January 2, 2003, was a very well bred horse, being by Horse of the Year A. P. Indy and out of Lovlier Linda, a multiple graded stakes winner. While he never won a grade one event, Old Trieste did take the Swaps (GII), the Del Mar Breeders' Cup Handicap (GII), and the Affirmed Handicap (GII) at age three; the Californian (GII) at four; and the Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap (GII) and the Del Mar Breeders' Cup (GII), for the second time, at age five. Overall, he finished with a 6-1-3 record from 14 starts. Minister Eric is from Old Trieste's first crop of foals, and was his third winner at the time he broke his maiden. Minister Eric is the fifth foal out of Musical Minister. She has produced one other stakes performer: River God, who was second in the restricted La Puente Stakes. Musical Minister was lightly raced, starting just nine times in three years. She finished with three wins and one second while earning $47,384. She is a half sister to three stakes winners: Salmon Ladder, who raced for an incredible eight years and was a multiple grade three winner in England and Italy; Capote's Prospect, who won the Texas Turf Challenge at age three; and Pico Teneriffe, a stakes winning filly at ages two, three, and four while earning nearly $600,000. Minister Eric's broodmare sire, Deputy Minister, was the second leading broodmare sire in 2003, with 23 stakes winners. Included in those is Oaks contender and two year old champion filly Halfbridled and Strong Hope, who upset Empire Maker in last year's Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga.
