POLLARD'S VISION is blind in one eye and thus his name as a tribute to Seabiscuit's jockey. Interesting thing is that his owner has sight problems in one eye as well and that spurred him to purchase this beautiful gray colt, who was passed over by several other outfits because of the eye. Doesn't seem to be holding him back any as he won the Illinois Derby last out in impressive fashion. The vision thing isn't quite as much of a problem for a speed horse, as long as he can see in front of him and hear them coming. Trainer Todd Pletcher has one of the top five barns in the world and he knows how to train a nice horse. Jockey John Velazquez rides first call for Pletcher and is starting to dominate the New York scene as Bailey approaches retirement. Has the connections, the story and the speed to stay out of trouble. Throw him in the mix to make the exotics pay. |

Pollard's Vision is by Carson City, a son of Mr. Prospector, who is known for siring speedy, sprinter types. Carson City himself won the Sapling at age two. He was ranked sixth on the general sire list in 2003, when his runners earned more than $6.7 million. His most prominent runner last year was Cuvee, who won the Futurity (GI) at Belmont and the Saratoga Special (GII). Overall, he is the sire of 11 crops, with more than 60 stakes winners, including Small Promises, champion older mare in Canada; State City, winner of the Dubai Golden Shaheen(GI); and City Zip, who won the Hopeful (GI) at Saratoga. Pollard's Vision is the second foal, and the first to race, out of his dam Etats Unis. Etats Unis was unraced, but is a half-sister to Bowman's Band, primarily a route horse who ran second in the Oaklawn Handicap (GI) and the Iselin (GII). Her dam, Hometown Queen (by Pleasant Colony), was second in both the Kentucky Oaks (GI) and the Fantasy (GI). Pollard's Vision third dam, Chris Evert, was the three-year-old filly champion, a winner of 10 of 15 starts, including the filly triple crown. Chris Evert is a half-sister to All Rainbows, the dam of 1988 Kentucky Derby victor Winning Colors. In addition to the numerous stamina influence in his direct tail-female line, Pollard's Vision carries the bloodlines of several Derby winners on his sire's side: Johnstown, Count Fleet, and Northern Dancer.
